Winter steel wheels gone ugly with rust. What's the cure ?

3yr old steel rims ugly as sin, with lots of surface rust. 

Needs wire clean, and re-paint with Hammerite Black.

Can't bring myself to brush it on, like an agricultural vehicle !.

Aerosol spray probably better finish, but thinner and more susceptible

to damage.

 

Have your steelies gone ugly, and what was the cure ?

Do you mean from new, or for storage?. Not seen any treatment since new.

Rust easily brushed off. How to seal until end of winter whilst in use through the winter?.

Cant think of anything that wouldn't just be removed by rain, snow and grit/road salt exfoliation

Then this is what caused your problems...lack of protection

What they will need is removing and either spraying (quick fix)

OR Powdercoating (Best for long term)

Then sealed inside and out with a good sealer

This will prevent any further damage next winter

 

As for now....just use a good durable wax (Collinite is ideal). This should arrest further corrosion until the winter is over

Make sure they are clean and dry before you wax them

Try ACF50 as a rust treatment also, used widely in the aerospace industry as a protective spray, also works wonders for rust removal. Hammerite straight to metal black spray should provide adequate future protection

On SWMBO rusty Getz's steel wheels just dislodged most of the rust with a wire brush then sprayed some smoooth Hammerite (just before a tyre change was due). One can was plenty for three decent coats on four wheels. At seven year old it is no wonder the wheels went rusty. Looks a lot better now.

Have a look at the Bilt Hamber range of products. A lot of what they do is for rust removal/prevention, as well as making your car and wheels look pretty!

Exactly, wax isnt going to stop rust, you need to prep it first get rid of the rust then acid etch primer several coats, then the paint colour several coats then a clear lacquer several coats.

I'd suggest that if you want to protect winter rims, they need to be stripped and repainted and then properly lacquered.
