Activation of cruise control on speed limiter stack - Fabia MK3

Lower equiped Fabias MK3 have standard built in speed limiter, if you get higher trim you get also cruise control. Stalk is different, since in the second case it has also button to switch between limiter and cruise control on the bottom side of the stack.

My question is would it be possible on cars equipped only with speed limiter to reprogram it to cruise control with VCDS? Of course you would lose speed limiter functionality, since the stack does not have button to change between them. Or must cruise control have this button?

I will have a possibility to check two identical Fabias, one equipped with speed limiter and the second one with cruise control from factory, but would appreciate if you could point me to directons where to look for differences. Definitely these below have to be checked:

Engine, byte 5 and byte 6:

I would expect that there should be some coding also in CAN gateway. Any other suggestions?

There isn't normally any extra coding in the CAN gateway as you're not adding any additional modules to the car, just tweaking the settings in existing ones.

I believe from the parts number above that the Fabia III is based on a Polo (6R) so I'd suggest you have a look here: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Cruise_Control_Retrofitting_(6R)

It looks like it will depend on which CECM is installed and may require some extra wiring and the cruise control switch.

I would be very surprised if you were able to recode the car to use the speed limiter only stalk for cruise control. You might be able to add an extra button separately rather than replacing the stalk by looking at the wiring diagrams but it'll be pretty ugly.

All the above is just my understanding from a quick google as I've not worked on a Fabia III.

Speed limiter is standard on MY2016 vehicles. I think that those instructions for Polo 6R are for Polo before FL. Fabias with speed limiter already have wiring and also stack with buttons to set speed, etc.

So I would like to try just to ''upgrade'' limiter to cruise control. Though, it could be, that CC requires also additional button to be activated. It does not hurt to try :).

As said, I will have to identical cars and will be able to play with them. Maybe it comes something good out of it :).

Anyway, speed limiter can be upgraded by Skoda service so cruise control, but they change the stack, which is logical...

While you're at it !

Would you have a look to see if it is possible to have the car to default to Speed Limiter at turn on. Car currently defaults to CC on turn on.

Around city - the speed limiter (SL) is really useful (as it doesn't turn off when you brake, as CC does)

Having it default to SL, saves having to press that "Mode" switch - which is a little bit awkward to get to.

Ciao!

I took a look, but no luck.

I could enable cruise control and also disable speed limiter, but I immediately got a fault code.
Maybe there should be also some setting on the steering stalk, but even the newest version of VCDS does not have it covered, so I just reset settings back to factory.

@Dithane: sadly I could also not locate default setting for turning CC/SL on :(.

A quick re-visit to this topic ... wondered if any joy in your original attempt to convert speed limiter to Cruise control?  ( Fabia NJ -- and without changing the stalk ).
