LED bulb replacements

Recommended Posts

My optician tells me my eyes are very good for my age and while I know my daylight distant vision is fine my short and night vision are not as good as they used to be and I am officially a grumpy old man.

With the latter aspect in mind I see a lot of vehicles fitted with non-standard lighting and apparently it is 'cool' to have headlights with a  blue tinge or very white (cold?) light and similar illuminating the rear number plate.

To my eyes excessively 'cold' lighting does not actually provide much real illumination of the road, or the number plate (they are virtually unreadable beyond 15 metres) compared to normal halogens.

Is it just me or do others experience this problem?

While I am griping I have to say that many LEDs fitted to cars are too bright especially on the rear, and brake lights in particular.

I think we have all sat behind a car at night with really bright LED eye-level brake lights on at the traffic lights.

The other aspect is the lack of thought in design of the rear cluster when the indicator light is lost in the bright brake lights. The older Passat with the indicator in the centre of the rear/brake light is particularly bad. Although that is not specifically a LED issue the brightness of LEDs can exacerbate the situation.

In daylight front LED indicators seem to be more directional, if you are in the right spot, usually head on they are fine, but at an angle (say when approached on roundabouts) they are particularly poor.

Similar situation as a pedestrian at a corner looking at LED equipped side mirror repeaters to see if an adjacent the car is turning in your direction, they do seem to be very directional and are either very bright or almost unnoticeable depending on your relative position.

A cautionary tale about the potential of LED headlights:

My worst case of a blinding LED headlight was about midday on sunny Australian summer's day with a single bright light from half a kilometre away. Initially I thought it was a mirror reflecting sunlight but it was unusually steady and as I drew near I was astounded to see it was the front light of a bicycle. Must have been one of those off-road 2000 lumen jobs, but honestly I dread to think what the effect at night would be like.

Just saying that if an upgrade is performed without due consideration for others then you are a potential menace and you may even be pulled over and defected.

I know that as one ages, night vision is reduced, and if you're myopic then the effect is even further increased.

It may well be that what you see as blinding, others don't. I know it's like this for me - lights at night seem brighter than they did 10 years ago!

Note, the above fog light bulbs; there are 4 on the vRS, but on RHD models, all 4 of the above bulbs won't fit (left most bulb has the washer bottle directly behind the bulb housing and only 30mm of space to play with).

For RHD, you'll want two of the ones above, and two of these for the outer bulbs;

As far as I've found they only come in 6000k, so will be slightly whiter than your stock 4200k DRL/Xenons.

I've noticed that the stock boarding lights in the mirrors are very weak, and I've found LEDs at superskoda.com. Has anyone ordered these or from another source?

Thanks/RL

Any suggestions for interior LED's that are small enough for the light housings?

Bought these for my Elegance. They are bright enough and are a huge improvement over the stock ones BUT they don't fit perfectly in the housing, they are missing a little bit of plastic that OEM ones have to make them perfectly fit. It's OK overall but you'll see a small gap of 3 or 4 millimeters when looking from under. I would never aim a high pressure water jet at them. Now two years later it's still OK.

Thanks for the info but both these bulbs are not 4300K nor fanless.

Why do you want fanless? I used these in my outer cornering lights, they have no fans. No fans == less lumens, nothing to cool the LED down. Note, they aren't 4300k. I suspect you might have trouble finding 4300k ones. I've only seen 6000k, red, and 3000k (yellow).

I thought fanless were more reliable for car but they are hard to find so you can suggest 4300K with fan also :)

Hi Guys,

I'm kind of a newbie, having a Combi 1.6 diesel. I'm going to replace my interior bulbs to LED (front, rear ceiling & trunk). My question is that I have W5W T10 LEDs, but not "canbus error free" versions. Will the computer show an error message if I use "non error free" bulbs inside and in the boot?

My next question is about replacing the outside side mirror lamps to LEDs (I can hardly see any light when I get out from the car). Is there an instruction how to do that?

Thank you in advance for your help :)

You do not need Canbus leds for the interior as they are not monitored by the system. The only exception is if you plan on changing the leds behind the red covers in the front doors, I believe they are monitored.

One more question please :) The bulbs under the red covers in the front doors are not lighting at all (I have not touched them yet at all, they are factory default).

I think they should, when I open the doors (I have KESSY), but they don't. I tried to switch Leaving Home / Coming home functions on/off, but same result: no light.

I have no error message on the CAR menu. Is there a way to activate them? I looking for something like this.

Hi Guys,

As some have mentioned, the exterior mirror/puddle lights are pretty poor.

Has anyone actually replaced them? If so how easy to change without breaking the mirror glass?

Ive seen lots of different sized LED 501's, which LED's are actually white, not blue/purple, but also fit the housing?

Also, are the puddle lights monitored by the cars bulb blown system? What bulbs has anyone used?

Thanks,

Dan
