Permanent disabling of Start-Stop with VCDS - solution!

Recommended Posts

Hello guys,

Today after fiddling a little bit with my 2016 Seat Ibiza TDI DSG I was able to SUCCESSFULLY and PERMANENTLY disable Start-Stop system.

Note: This solutions is not the vwwatercooled.com temperature or voltage method!!! Despite their effectiveness, I don't want to risk my car electronics with such "hacks".

Note 2: This is tried on 2016 Seat Ibiza, but the Skoda Fabia/Octavia and other VAG's should be virtually the same.

Note 3: Please carry out any modifications and coding AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!. I will not be held responsible for any damage of the vehicle and I am just giving you the steps.

The tools needed:

VCDS Release 16.8.3 or higher version + compatible OBD II CAN Enabled cable. (You can buy them @Ross-Tech)

The steps to disabling start-stop system:

1. Enter 19-CAN Gateway

2. Click on Coding-07

3. Click on Long Coding Helper

4. Change Byte 3, Bit 2-3 (Drop down menu) from 04 Start/Stop System with Recuperation installed [PR-7L6]  to 08 Start/Stop System NOT installed [PR-7L3]

5.Change Byte 4Bit 0 to 0

6.Change Byte 15Bit 0 to 0

7. Click on Exit - top left hand corner

8. Click on Do it!

Voila you are done!

I would be really happy if you can report your success stories with Fabia, Octavia and other last gen VAG cars. Also I would be happy to post it to other forums, by citing my nick as a credit @kickdown

Any questions I am on site! :)

Nope. Car is clear of error codes. There is only one visible effect, when you go to Car menu and you press the Start-Stop system status icon it shows the massage "System is not available".

Carista and maybe OBDeleven now can do that from their menu driven screens, I've seen that option when looking through controller maps so I could see that it could be done easily, but have chosen to leave things as they are and only switch it off as and when I feel the need in slow moving traffic, maybe not so much an issue for me as the car is  MANTRANS..

Kickdown, I'm pretty sure the 'stop, start' police won't like this at all!...  lol... :D

I hope they won't notice me... :D

This is my second "sin", as my previous post shows how to disable the seat belt warning in Fabia... :D

I'd hope a lot of this gets covered by future changes in MOT type of testing, that would take the smile off making these changes and forgetting about them.  Also spot checks at roadside could apply fines as the "start stop" is meant to reduce emissions and that usually means reduced car tax in any country.

Don't get me wrong, it seems if you have a DSGTRANS then stop/start is not designed to work well - but that is another issue for VW group to sort out (I have an Audi S4 that was built just before stop/start came along and I don't might that, it is just the emissions of that engine "just" roll over into the next UK car tax group and could have been avoided if they had fitted start/stop - I think, but that car is worth paying a ransom in car tax - maybe/sometimes/possibly?)

They won't until at least 2020 when it looks likely the stop start system gets checked at MOT time. It's to make sure emissions are not toxic on restart when hot after three or more stops in simulated traffic. But I wouldn't worry about it, you can always switch it back on if you need to.

MIne works ok with DSG. Not had any issue with it. I do switch it off sometimes but usually leave it on and it works ok everytime.

How would they ever be able to test start/stop at the roadside?

Quite easily the way the OP has done it due to the ‘System not available’ message.

Don’t the other way (via voltage) more difficult as the criteria for start stop to kick in has not been met.

I also imagine whilst they come with an on/off button they could not be failed anyway.

rum4mo, I would check those grapes as they appear to have gone sour  :D

The referances to my other car and the heavy car tax burden are very much sour grapes, caught in a horrible trap where AUTOTRANS and MANTRANS have different rules, still I did have the choice of what to buy and I bought what I wanted and this is one of the penalties I have to pay!

The other thing about " how would they check at roadside" for start/stop deletion will be that the manual overide switch will probably not light up - but I'm sure that the police do have other thngs on their minds although deleting this function normally pulls a car into a higher tax bracket due to increased emissions - so that will be seen as tax evasion which normally has governments rushing to put you into jail quicker than just killing someone! (crimes against the state - shock horror!!)

The EU Commission is seemingly starting court actions against 7 EU Countries that allowed the VW Group to cheat and lie and have taking next to no actions against them so far other than allowing them to carry out voluntary recall actions that likely do not reduce any emissions but removes the defeat device they had when vehicles were Type Approved.

Germany & UK being 2 of those Governments that conspired with others to turn a blind eye.

Once the 2nd biggest car manufacturer in the world gets penalties and prosecutions in Europe then maybe the government agencies will have some right to pick on private individuals, millions of whom the VW Group conned along with the various Governments Treasury so the general public really.

Even so, if they were that bothered about it, they wouldn't of included a button to turn it off. I don't see how turning it off every time you get in the car is any different to permanently disabling it.

I live in a similarly rural location and have disabled the stop/start on my other VW Group car.  The first time it would normally kick in is after about 5 minutes when I have to cross a crossroad with sometimes limited visibility.  The last thing I want is for the engine to stop and cause a moment's hesitation just when I'm coming to rest at the give way, but have spotted a gap to cross safely.

I've set mine up to remember the last setting (on or off) so generally leave it overridden unless I consider the traffic flow to merit its use - or it's going into the dealer's.

I'd love to see this "toggle" functionality for when I add a Fabia III to the family this year.

Joking aside ect, sticking to this topic of changing car settings from factory, I see the next changes to "road tax" in UK include a large hit if the showroom price of a car is over £???????? - this must only lead to people buying "unloaded" models and using specialist places to reto fit the extras, so what is UK government trying to achieve in the real world by introducing these changes, why can't they just move on and dump the "tax tab" on fuel so the more we use the roads, the more we pay - seems fair to me?(with my 30MPG funday car that only gets used for about 3.5K miles a year)

I have grown to like my Stop / Start but if i want it off the 'Off' button is not easy to get to, i must put a coloured dot on it to spot easier.

So when i am in traffic at a junction where i do not want a might Stop/ might not i just hit the A/C button or turn up the heating knob and that disables it.

I wonder if it'll be the list price before options?

But totally agree- tax fuel. Doing so rewards efficient vehicles, rewards those who don't drive much, and rewards economical driving too. Makes 100% sense IMO.

I have just installed a memory module into my fabia. Works great. It remembers the last state and I don't need to disable AutoStop each time I restart the engine. I think it is a better solution than permanently disabling it using software tweaks - I can still turn it on and off when I want.
