Is it a belt or a chain? How do you tell?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

It's been a while since my last post. It's that time of the year where my lovely 2013 rapid 1.2tsi (105) elegance greentech with 37,000 (ish) miles needs some TLC and a service. My question is how do I know if it's a belt or chain and what services should it be getting?

If looking from the front of the car you can see the oil filter high up on the left at the front(turbo/exhaust manifold  also at the front) of the engine then it's a EA111 cam chain

The later EA211 cam belt  engine is totally different - turbo/exhaust manifold on bulkhead side of the engine and oil filter down below

I have the EA111 1.4 16v in my Superb  (1.2 is 8v) and DON't use long life service intervals - really important for the cam chain (as well as the turbo etc....)

Great stuff, EA111 Cam chain it is then. I get it serviced annually and it doesn't have the 27000 miles yet so its booked in to a local (ish) specialist VWAG garage (they're a revo dealer to but I'm guessing thats a different topic!) . So this will be its 4th service and second MOT :)
