Recall on diesel cooling issue?

My Fabia had ever suffered from overheating, we've been all over the country in it. It was at the dealers on Friday for its annual service and they carried out the coolant change while it was in. Now it overheats after driving 6 or 7 miles! It'll be going back in on Monday.

Obviously put the wrong coolant in it! I would complain about it.. and state that they've put the car at risk of damage to the engine by not following the correct guidelines..

So after a few weeks of trying, Bristol St Skoda Derby have finally replaced the electric water pump. They wouldn't believe me, the service manager ran the car for a few days and confirmed that the car was running hot! Let see what happens next

I can't believe that cars are still coming off production lines into retailers with this issue.. it should have been put to bed a long time ago by now at the factory.. it's a complete farce of a situation..

try and keep track of how often your DPF Regen kicks in.. see if it comes on more than what you think it should.. let us all know..

Well, the car is back.. no paperwork handed over with the car though.. I asked - "there just isn't any." was the response.. hmm, okay.  They couldn't establish a reason why there was no warning on the overheat - I just have to monitor and they are going to phone me on Monday to see if I have any further issues across the weekend.

I got some spare coolant.  Now I asked about the G13 type, the service desk said, that coolant is not to be used in the Fabia Mk3 TDi.. I said is there some spare coolant left over, "yes.. it's in the car". Okay, I'll check this out - only to find a bottle of G13 coolant.  Now, either it's a different type - or they have just re-used an old bottle (which begs the question of contamination),  given this bottle has a Skoda label on it and the service desk said they weren't using Skoda coolant anymore, it's a confused picture.  Unless there's a distinct difference between the two part numbers:

G13 - G 013 A8J M1

G13 - 5E0 121 013

The first one was on the container they kindly left on my passenger seat with the seatbelt wrapped around it.  The other is what I bought months ago - which is not to be used apparently (and is pretty much full to the brim).

Answers on a postcard please.. if anyone knows of a difference or not let me know!  Thanks.

One thing to note, I've had a 65 reg 1.6 VW Passat TDi Bluemotion from Skoda Assist as a courtesy since the issue, noted that the mpg in that car was returning better than the Mk3! Given the size difference between the two and a bigger engine, would have thought a Fabia 1.4 TDi 105 would win hands down.. obviously not!

Funnily enough my Octavia 1.6TDi is far better on economy than my Polo 1.4TDi ever was.

i work in a vw garage and we still use g13 (could be g13+) anti freeze in everthing but we have to use distilled water now when we work on cooling systems

Do you know the difference between these two types of coolant mentioned?

G13 - G 013 A8J M1

G13 - 5E0 121 013

presumably you're now using distilled for the lack of impurities in it?

Sorry for butting in on this, but my daughter and my son in law have both very recently purchased mk3 1.4tdi Fabia's, one with 7sp DSG the other is a manual, one is a 2016 65 plate the other a late 2015 65 plate.

Is there any way that they would be able to tell if their cars had been recalled? Notice in service book? Stickers in boot floor or anything else to show them all should be well?

They don't know I'm asking and I don#t want to unnecessarily worry them if all is well.

Hello Sittingbull,

No service books these days with skodas.

You can ask dealer to print out service details with invoices for the work. That is what I have asked for when getting my tdi.

Invoices and records showed that coolant has been replaced out of schedule which is what vag does if pump has not failed so far. Mine is still ok, being '15 plate and having 23k on the clock. Hopefully that does the trick as warranty runs out with the end of the year for me.

Let us know your findings!

Thank you, I'll need to get them to ask when they take their cars in for service, which may not be for some time as they've only recently taken ownership. Although they should be able to ask at the local Skoda dealer for the history outwith that schedule.

Well time to revisit this. We had the recall, but a few months later the pump failed anyway. I assumed it was the time spent with the old coolant. So a new pump and new coolant. 12months later we just had an overheat again and it looks just the same as last time. Understandably my wife is now very unhappy with her car!

Update. It's confirmed it is the water pump again, and it's not the first to have a replacement fail with the alternative coolant according to the dealer. However they have said that recently there has been a new water pump, that has a new part number, suggesting a modified part. Should be back with us tomorrow.

Just doen a search for the fabia water pump issue, and found this forum. All very interesting. I have just had to pay my Skoda garage to replace the water pump on my wife's fabia 1.4 TDI 105, as she has had the overheating problem. Over £500 as it is now out of warranty, by 6 months. Will try to get Skoda to explain why the pumps are so unreliable, but don't live in hope. The garage gave me the old pump, when I asked for it, and explained the issue was that the sliding sleeve becomes jammed, and does not allow the pump to work properly. The sleeve should move as the engine comes up to temp, allowing the pump to move the coolant around. If it jams, the pump does not work properly, and the engine overheats.

What puzzled me is that at no time during the overheat did the fan kick in to life.

But the garage tells me that the first part of the diagnosis instructions is to remove and check the water pump.

No idea what the coolant is, but it is pink.

Welcome.

Best get Skoda UK to get a Communications manager to call you.

They can do there checks see why you were not made aware of the Service Campaign, and they can get on with paying your bill.

Nothing to do with the Manufacturers Warranty, there was a Fundamental Design, Manufacturing, material or Fluid failure issue, and Skoda / VW knew

they just never informed you.   Part was not fit for purpose and it is as simple as that.

Offski,

Thanks for your advice, I have completed the contact from on the website, so shall wait and see what happens next.

I am disappointed that the problem happened as my wife uses the car to travel from Fife down to Solihull to visit her mother on a regular basis. The next trip is next week. Our previous Fabias have not had any sort of issue like this, the last one reaching 130, 000 before it was part ex'd for this one. Now not sure that was such a good idea.

My own Superb is a 16MY TDi, and has done 50k, with no issues, except for the exhaust emissions light on, so its into the garage to have that looked at tomorrow. Still under warranty though.

It was at Specialist Cars in Dundee. No issues with them, they were very good, explaining what they were doing, and providing costs for options. Also they saved the old water pump for me, and gave it to me to take away, as I asked for it.

Still no contact from Skoda customer service, apart from the emails to say that they had received my complaint.

Paul that was the Master tech was excellent and might still be there.

The question is if your car was one that should have had the Service Campaign carried out to have the coolant replaced as that was a preventative measure.

Have you had the car from new and has it been serviced at main dealers, or have you asked and got the Service and Warranty History and was your car part of the Service Campaign, and was it done?

Skoda UK should be able to tell you that easily, but then they know the Cars History on the System in Dundee and Kieren on the service desk knows his stuff.

Hi Offski,

Thanks for your advice.

The car was purchased from Dundee in May 2016, it was a Skoda vehicle from Milton Keynes, that was pushed out to them on our request, as it was the exact spec we were looking for. It was first registered in March 2015. Since we bought it, it has had 2 services, one main and one oil change, but I have no idea what was done before that. We are going on 2 weeks holiday tomorrow, so I will ask Dundee for the info by email, and see if they will play ball, otherwise I will go and see them when we get back.

I have no issues with the staff in Dundee, they have been helpful, as far as they can be, with both of my Skoda.

Skoda UK have failed to get back to me about the complaint that I logged on the website, so I am disappointed about that. It was supposed to be replied to in 3 working days, it is now 5 working days ( 7 elapsed) so it may be that I have to complain again .

I don't have a MK3 Fabia Estate 1.4 TDI since April this year, but in 2017, at about 30000km, my car overheated while going uphill but did not overheat too much so I ignored it for the moment, but a week later it overheated in stop an go traffic and I was forced to pull over. After a few hours I got to the dealer and they changed the water pump and all was good for one month when they called me saying that I need to go back so they could replace the coolant. All good, went back, replaced it, no visible change on my part whatsoever. After another month or so they called telling me that they need to change the coolant again. Went againt to the dealership, cooler was changed, had no overheating problems ever since.

This was one of the many dissapointments regarding the MK3 Fabia and what ultimately led me back to Fabia 2 Facelift.

Just been re-familiarising myself with this thread... my Fabia TDI 105 had the recall work done last year, and a couple of weeks ago at 51,000 miles, the engine overheated as I was travelling home on the M6 and rapidly lost power. The AA diagnosed it as being water pump. Really frustrating and it had just been in for its routine service the week before. Thankfully sorted under warranty but I’ve not had a car overheat on me before... has definitely impacted on my opinion of the car. Spoken to a few other people with Polos and Octavias who’ve had similar issues.

2.0TDI Water Pump issues has been a long running thing and continues with the Euro 6 ones.

The Euro 6 1.4 TDI 3 Cylinder Water Pump failing are just ridiculous from the VW Group, and decades after going to water cooled from air cooled blaming the coolant would be funny if not such an issue to some owners that have to suffer the messing about and even paying good money to get cars fixed.

VW Group need some Trust Building Measure like a 5 year gesture warranty on the Euro 6 1.4 TDI 3 cylinders, and if there are issues at 5 years and beyond they admit to them being responsible.

Besides the overheating of my previous Fabia, the last car that overheated on me was a 1989 Citroen BX 1.9 diesel with about 400 000km on the clock. I was forced to change the thermostat on site (about 20 euros), added some coolant and I was on my way within hours. This happened about 11 years ago.

@Knuckles  If you suspect a Recall then ask a Main Dealership to check or Skoda UK Customer Services.

http://skoda.co.uk/about-us/recall-actions

If your car had a Recall it would have been Recalled,or should have been or it is not a 'Recall', so check that or for recall actions, service campaigns or TPIs.

There is not a Water Pump one for Mk2 Octavia.  There are Water Pumps that are about as good as a Chocolate Fire Guard.

Thermostat issues as well.

Loads of threads in the Octavia Section.
