Rear Wheel bearing replacement (tips)

Never was a boyscout but do like to be prepared. 

One of the rear wheel bearings has started to rumble so ordered a replacement, i know the ins and outs of replacing but have a few questions if i come acrop??

 

Whats the chance of the inner race being left behind on the stub axel?

 - If it does then whats the best advise for removal? Cut carefully / any tools i could have to hand?

What if the new Hub/Bearing doesn't 'slip' on?

 - I have read you can tap it on with a socket which fits the inner race? is this safe?

 

Hub pullers.... a nessassary tool?

That would pull the hub and any parts left behind wouldn't it?

Either of those pullers will remove the hub, although the second looks a better option.

 

If the inner track gets left behind, use an angle grinder with a thin cutting disc fitted and cut a groove into the track but not all the way through - just far enough to break through the hardened layer. Then take a sharp chisel, place it in the groove you have just cut and give it a couple of stout clouts, that should make the ring split and you can then draw it off.

Thanks for that post kentphil1 I need to replace my hub and that will give me a good head start

I read this post with interest. On the Autodoc youtube page, the mechanic/demonstrator simply slides off the old hub and replaces the new one. No pulling etc. Why so different?
