I'm surprised the Nordic countries manage to get by INSPITE of their seeming lack of exclusive private schools and health care.

How can they possibly be relatively happy?.

Govt. puts tranquilizers in our drinkwater reservoirs :) (Warning: Alternative fact!)

Income tax on average salaries: 25 %, more or less

VAT 25 % (less on food)

Taxes on booze, baccy, petrol/diesel (but it's pretty much the same levels in the UK)

Flip side: no fees in higher education, pre-school fees  £150/month

Our NHS system has more or less the same advantages and drawbacks as yours.

No paradise, but we manage.

But it mustn't be forgotten that there are those who for various reasons fall right through the meshes of the safety net. And the income gap has widened considerately the last 20 years, as has segregation. The gig economy hasn't spread much - yet - but one never knows what the future might bring.

An open letter to Theresa May by Catherine Bearder MEP for South East England (Lib Dem)

Dear Mrs May,

You called an election last week so that British voters can, you claim, by electing a large Conservative parliamentary majority, give you the "strongest hand" possible in the Brexit negotiations.

But I am afraid Mrs May you have already decided on the direction you are taking this country in.

Today the leaders of the 27 EU countries will meet to finalise their negotiating guidelines, for what Guy Verhofstadt described to Liberal MEPs this week as probably the shortest Council meeting ever. Why? Because they are all are agreed on one thing, the UK cannot get a better deal outside the EU than the one it currently has inside.

It's not that the EU countries want to punish Britain, (although being called the "mafia" by Mr Farage does get their tails up, but thankfully they know he doesn't speak for the UK). It's just

that there are rules to being in a club. One of those rules is paying a membership fee of that club. When you say you want all the benefits of membership, whilst not being a member, paying the membership fee or abiding by the rules, it tends to make others in the club feel a bit peeved.

But campaign away in this election Mrs May. Try to get your "improved mandate", even though it will make no difference to your strength of argument, negotiators negotiate with governments, not the numbers of MP. Oh and by the way, it's probably not best that your opening gambit is to insult leaders, that's an extraordinarily unhelpful way to get what you want.

I don't doubt that throughout the negotiations you and your Tory Brexit ministers will claim you are being bullied by nasty Mrs Merkel et al as you rediscover again and again that unfettered access to our largest export market comes hand in hand with the free movement of labour and people. But rules are rules, Mrs May and the EU will insist on compliance for UK just as it does with everyone else.

Don't get me wrong, there are many in this country who know now you are bluffing when you say this election will strengthen your hand in the EU. My party, the Liberal Democrats, are just 100,000 of them.

But on June the 9th, when all the fun and games are over (and the polls predicted were probably accurate) you will have to negotiate the deal you promised and I suspect, Mrs May, you were bluffing all along.

Best wishes,

Catherine Bearder MEP

The Tories are promising a hard brexit, therefore there will be a large turnout at the election (80%+) and the country will vote in a Labour / Lib Dem coalition.

If the Lib Dems get a sniff of power they will be in there like a shot, because they know they will never get enough seats to form a government on their own.

I am finding the main issues people want to discuss in the declining abilities of the NHS and that Schools are asking hard pressed parents for contributions of tens of pounds per term to pay for basics at the school (state schools of course).  Along with reductions in armed services and police and fire service numbers  the issues are not, by any means, just BREXIT, although the £100B cost of BREXIT, as estimated by PwC and the like, and the quarter of a million jobs loss, and the loss of their spending power, moving of European Distribution Hubs from the UK to Rest of EU in preparation for UK being outside the EU, are a consequential concern of BREXIT.

Issues for England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, maybe the Falklands, Gibraltar and various other places,

but the UK Government will still spend big in Aid / Bribes to other supposed 'Poor Countries'.

Please remember when you say 'NHS' you mean Englands NHS as controlled and funded by the UK Government, maybe that in Wales as well,

Scotland and Nothern Ireland have their Goverment's controlling spending their monies how they decide, maybe well, maybe not so well and wasteful.

Same with Education and other stuff important to tax payers and non tax payers.

Same with Police quite possibly, so there is UK Government control of Agencies and funding for the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland &

other dependencies and then there is Devolved Powers and budgets and Countries that the UK Government dish out dosh to as well.

Whilst these are issues, brexit is still the primary focus of everyone.

It trumps everything else voters usually care about as it's impact on everything is huge.

To believe otherwise is extremely foolish by Labour

Hard BREXIT can turn a strong and stable economy in to a weak and unstable one.

The Cons are right about one thing in that one needs a strong economy to pay for Education, Heath service etc but they have failed to do that by allowing the national debt to increase by £1T over the last 7 years and not collecting the right taxes to start paying down this mounting deficit.

Labour are responding to the concerns voiced by the electorate and when the electorate raise lack of health care, longer waiting times or services being removed completely, schools asking for money from parents, less police, fire services, wealth inequality with the tax cuts for the wealth off being five times higher than those one incomes less than £45K, then Labour must respond on those issues with coherent policies in what is a very difficult outlook where it is almost a decade now the UK has been failing to balance the books.  Other issues are regarded as very important, such as the environment ie dealing with pollution in cities, which Labour are receiving direct support from parties such as the Greens and LibDems, at a local level, to stand aside and support the Labour candidate against the Cons continuing their agenda which is having huge negative effect on public health, education and environment as well as the economic affects of BREXIT.

^^^

?

Have your favoured statisticians or PwC done any really useful figures like for the 'Disposable' Income of Conservative & Unionist Party Members, supporters, donors and voters?

How much above the 'National Average Wage' since the Government like talking averages.

?

When has the Labour Party while forming the UK Government ever done anything to reduce national debt, public spending, contributions to the EU or reduce pollution and that cost of that to the public in cash money and higher risks to their health in the past 4 decades?

Low taxes in the USA are not helping so many in the USA in poverty.

As to German Pensioners and other, best check how poor many are, even those that worked hard all their lives.

Someone pays for the level of German Services which is why Germany or some of those in Germany are so pro EU.

Lets see what pressures Putin puts on Germany very soon.

Germany might just need the USA as their very special best friend, but then the US President knows how to make Germany assume the position.
