Phillips MK3 Octavia VRS OEM+

Just treated myself to a Diesel MK3 DSG Octavia VRS Estate after having a VW Jetta DSG 2.0TDI for the previous 3 years. This is now the second Skoda in the house hold as the wife has a Fabia Monte Carlo it seemed a no brainer to go for something else in the Skoda range. 

 

Im treating this thread as documentation rather than a big build thread like some of the others. My Jetta had minor changes with most work being carried out by AKS Tuning. Excuse the photos I'm no photographer just play with Instagram filters :)

The few bits the Jetta had:

  1. MK2 VRS Zenith 18 Wheels
  2. MK2 VRS Brake conversion all round
  3. HR 40mm Lowering springs
  4. HR Rear Anti-roll Bar
  5. TT Front Top Mount Bushes
  6. Darkside EGR Delete
  7. EGR Cooler Delete
  8. Darkside Decat
  9. Darkside Silicon Intake Pipe
  10. BMC Intake Filter
  11. Revo Remap
  12. RNS315 DAB Retrofit

 

The new motor seems to be the only one I could find with this spec for sale its just missing the adaptive cruise which I think I can live without, unless if can be fitted? Anyone know?

I activated cornering fogs last night with the intention of making some more VCDS adaptations when I get time.

 

Hopefully this thread doesn't bore anyone too much!

I've had this week off so in between the rain I've be doing bits to the car. Pretty much a new car prep that I do everytime I get a new motor:

 

Serviced - oil, filter, fuel filter, BMC air filter. I also removed the baffle from the air box and drilled out part of the front air scoop with the intention of taking a Dremel to it to make it neater. 

My wheels spacers also went on which makes the wheels sit close where I feel they should have been from factory.

Bought a roof rack and boot liner. The boot liner fits nicely but isn't as good as the autoform one I had in the jetta. Also had some Michelins PS4's put on the front, it had continentals with life left in them but couldn't get on with them, just didn't seem to have the grip levels I wanted.

Bought LED's to do an interior light conversion and also replaced the bottom trim on both keys.

Also gave it what seems to be its first every proper clean, Snowfoam, degrease, wash, iron off, tar remover, wash, clayed, wash, rinse, waxed and rain X. This also gave me chance to inspect the bodywork which is fairly good condition, several stone chips on the front that have been filled in with paint pen but its three years old so it to be expected.

I would like to get it properly detailed as the swirls are fairly bad.

While playing more with VCDS and activating some random bits I noticed that all the cruise control bits/bites are activated and installed, I however don't have the cruise control stalk so could this been fitted and work?

See here for link to part, replacement is easy.
 

  • Remove battery cover
    • This reveals a torx screw its either T5,6 or 7 cannot remember right now
  • Remove Screw
  • End of fob needs sliding to the side of the key
  • It should then fall off
  • Assemble in reverse with new parts
    • Make sure you use the new screw supplied as its a different thread

I've been away for a few weeks with work which normally ends up with me bored one night ordering car parts. As usual I did... only little bits though nothing major. All the parts were waiting for me when I got home :)

 

1. DSG Paddle Extensions - They only stick on but for the price the quality is ok and they look pretty nice I think.

2. Bonnet Gas Strut Kit

3. Remaining LED's I needed to complete the interior

I also booked a local detailer who is part of the approved detailer thing to come and give the car a wash, inspect the paint and discuss ceramic coatings, really pleased to say he really impressed me so I will be booking a enhancement detail in the near future.

Went along to GTI International today and ended up getting a Shark Performance remap, I seem to get a different remap on every car I have?! But thats the only way to really see what someones map is truly like rather than just listening to opinions. They had a really good offer on so decided to jump in and do it. First impressions are really good, but as I only live 5 mins away from Rockingham Speedway I didn't really give it a good test. The daily commute this week should give me smile!

Shark Performance

Stock 184hp 380nm

Stage 1 235hp 500nm

 

So I'm pleased to say I really like it! The best short description I can come up with is Smooth & Progressive. Its not in your face and aggressive, you'll just be making progress glace at the speedo and think I better ease off before I get a ticket :D 

 

Having had a REVO map on my last car that made me want to always mash the throttle and drive like a pleb, this one I have found I'm happy to plod along and wait for the perfect space to open it up. At low speeds I find it a much smoother drive than stock.

Thanks for the update.

I think when I get mine mapped I'll go for a more conservative torque increase as mine is a 6 speed manual so want to preserve the life of the clutch. Maybe have it increased from 380nm to 440nm.

Yeah as far as I am aware the DSG can handle a considerable amount over the manual box.

Not arrived yet but ordered some VRS seat inserts from Superskoda

You can see why I ordered the new trim, the last owner must have had a lot of keys on the fob or been blind?!

The V from Octavia came off when cleaning the car on Monday, the cloth snagged it so it was time to debag...

Think it needs the Rieger Front Splitter and Rear defuser, although it possibly needs lowering first, which way round should I do it?

I'd lower it first personally ... You might find the splitter's not feasible once you've lowered it. I used to have a MK1 Cupra R and the standard splitter on it scraped on EVERYTHING. Speed bumps, multi-storey car parks, kerbs, steep inclines / descents.

 

At least this way you can judge it after being lowered, but if you do it the other way you're screwed!

The Rieger rear diffuser can go on at any time, to be honest - although you may want to jack the car up for access for fitment, regardless of if it's lowered or not. I'm respraying the one on mine in black soon; which will require removal - and as it's in the process of lowered springs on today (get it back this evening, retrospective project thread will be up soon) - I assume I will need to jack it up for access. 

 

As for front splitter, once lowered I would also recommend against it. Doesn't add much to the looks (IMHO), but also you'll get endless grief from the 'obstacles' Stu highlighted above.

Cheers Chaps always nice to have some decent logical opinions! 

My old Jetta wasn't lowered particularity far and it used to scrape on the smallest of things, think I'll go for the rear diffuser then lower :) need to pay for DSG Service in a few weeks too.

I have a cruise stalk for a Mk3 VRS listed in the classifieds if you are interested

Make me an offer :)

 

Nice car BTW, would have loved a Mk3 but my funds couldn't stretch that far so ended up with a Mk2 FL.

Cruise control is fitted, had it done by Alex Retro. He did a great job but to be honest I should have done it myself, there was absolutely nothing I would have had trouble with.... sometimes though its better to leave it to someone else.

Anyone thinking of using him I would fully recommend him!
