Wings work by moving air downwards. 

Think about it; there's a bunch of air sitting there, minding it's own business, nice even pressure. Along comes a wing or two attached to an aeroplane, and suddenly there's higher pressure beneath the wing and lower pressure above it. Only explanation that makes any sense is that those wings moved air downwards. It's nice and obvious when the 'wings' are the rotors of a helicopter, because the downdraft is all in a small area.

 

Opposite happens with a car producing downforce, it moves air upwards.

 

Simple(s)?

Nope, i meant the ones on my chest :D didnt get around to it yet.

@gadgetman is it straight across or allowing for curvature of the sternum and pectoral muscles ;)
