Remap problem

Hi Guys,

Looking for some expert advice.... I had my car remapped by a company recommended on the Forum and was left a bit bewildered by the result, in that I did not really notice the extra oomph as expected.  The car had to go into a Skoda garage last week due to a Columbus head unit problem and the garage contacted me to say that the car was one of the models caught up in the emissions 'scandal' and they could fix it.  I was caught unawares and, thinking it was a legal requirement, gave the go ahead.

It was only the next morning that I realised that this may affect the ECU and contacted the garage to find out it was too late.  The technician I spoke to said that if I contacted the company again they would be able to do the remap again for a reduced price.  I contacted the lad and he said yeh, he could do it for £100 as I already owned the software invvolved and it would only take 30 mins to "re-flash" the ECU.

He then called me yesterday and said that he would have to contact Volkswagen for a code and that would cost me £25 , but worse than that he would have to do a full remap again at the full price on top of that!!!

I am not sure if this is right and don't believe I should be paying the full price again PLUS this £25 for a code from Volkswagen???

Can anyone please advise?

One more wee thing, the memory on my seat has stopped working, I saw on an earlier topic that there is a technique to reset it which involves  putting the seat all the way forward, then the rear of the seat all the way up, then the seat fully forward again until I her a 'boing'.  What does it mean the rear of the seat all the way up??

Cheers

Basically it’s all down to your re-mapper, it’s not their fault you had the remap overwritten, that said I have heard that some well respected mappers will not charge you again to upload the remap again.

Who did you use?

Interesting the £25 for the code from VW to be able to remap out The Fix',

that will be a whole can of worms for Paul Willis CEO of VW UK to answer questions on,  Remove Defeat device from 2.1 million UK vehicles and then

assist 'independents' in then getting rid of the EU / German Authority approved engine management.

Was it,

Maybe because the 'fix' map is different to the origin map......they will have to apply a different remap post fix?

From what I've read about the VAG update, it makes substantial changes to the layout of the maps on the ECU so I'd imagine there's a lot more work for a tuner to do the first time they do one. That said, it's work that probably only needs to be done once, rather than on every car they see.

I would say it's acceptable for you to cover the re-mappers costs for the time taken to re-remap the car but whether or not you find the £100 acceptable is between you and your bank balance.   Personally, I think £100 for what is likely to be 30-40 mins work is a bit of a wee wee take, considering you've already paid for the initial map.

FWIW, I had my previous car mapped at a local VAG specialist (Revo agent) and my car was returned to stock , remapped and returned to stock again in my 3 years ownership and I was never charged for the work to be carried out.   This was down to the Revo agent though.

1. Re-mapper remaps OP's car.

2. OP then allows VAG to remap car, which wipes the remapper remap.

3. Car now has different map configuration courtesy of VAG and therefore needs a totally new remapper remap for power boost.

Can someone explain why the remapper shouldn't charge full price for a new job?

VW Group messing up possibly 1.2 Million vehicles in the long term,

why should Independent Mechanics and Tuning Houses not be able to earn a bit from those stupid enough to have gone and had a Remap Wiped,

or just accepted having The Fix for no good reason other than to help out the VW Group.

Dealerships are earning doing ' The Fix'  and have not ever the morals to say, 'Hold on we are messing up more than 1% of the cars'.

Some are even carrying out the work without permission.  Barstewards.

Very interested in the 'Code' for £25 from VW / Skoda / Audi or SEAT,

not as though it was like the ripping off customers telling a Radio Code, this is a whole other 'Can of worms',.

Tyre fitter fits you a new tyre after a flat which leaves you with a destroyed tyre.

You then drive over a nail and damage the new tyre beyond repair.

You go back to the tyre fitter and he says "Sorry, you need another new tyre at full price".

Is this any different to the scenario which has happened here? As said, the new map is completely different to reflashing the original file which is no longer suitable due to the change in ECU parameters.

^^^^^ Exactly

It's not a simple case of uploading the old map, it's a completely new job.

^^^?

Who is advertising a Generic Remap for Euro 5 TDI's that have had the VW Fix to remove the Defeat Device & Engine Management?

(the one VW says was not Illegal in Europe.)

If it's a solo tuner, then yeah, he has to do it all over again. The fact that he's charging you for your basic map is stupid and greedy. But doing the same tune again might mean the same work again. Though I'm sure he could try to use the same parameters from the previous remap and see how it stands, maybe just some fine tuning that shouldn't add up to a full remap.

My advice, next time go with a big tuning company, that already has a tuned base map and just do fine tuning. This way, worst case scenario you lose your WHOLE remap, they just do some fine tuning at a fraction of a cost because you already bought the tuned base map.

The damage is done now though, I'd advice to bargain with the tuner for a discounted price since you already paid the first time.

@Fivestarremap it's always good to get feedback though? Perhaps better if discussed, but even indirect as per this topic is good! I can't imagine this will be the first mapped > vag touched > can I remap scenario with master codes required.

You could also say, @Burroo came to you because your name was rattled about on the forum. Pros and cons at every turn.

By being open we can get to the bottom of issues like burro raised. Now it's far clearer the whys and wherefores, this is largely a positive outcome for the whole process and I'd say for you too :D.

I work for myself and if I make a mistake I accept the cost, if it's a change I charge. I can't see anyone objecting to the basics of life. what I charge is also related to what I've lost. If you needed me to drive for 2 hours to do a 1 hour job... it's not a 1hour job it's 5hours, or pretty close to a day.  I had a BT engineer complain he was covering the highlands, on loan from glasgow... so he was expensed accomodation, on overtime/disruption pay. Contra I'd done 3 700mile round trips to be onsite when BT tried 3 times to sort the problem they had made and I was on a fixed cost one trip deal... But having sorted it, there is an option for 8 more sites... so I should net out in the end, but I am out of pocket for 'an easy job'.

Very true . I am in the process of looking at buy-in odis and if I do I will contact Brian and roll back emissions update and reflash his car purely at cost 40-50 . He's  a nice guy and I think he thought I was trying to rob him which isn't the case on my part . I'm very level and have Been in motor trade 25 years this year without a bad name to repairs at my garage or tuning issues.  I will keep in touch with him when I purchase it. Most people come to me after the update and only pay once to tune it . Brian was unfortunate having just mapped it prior to update so I see his anger fully

To be fair Mark it was never a question if you try I g to 'Ron's me, I simply asked a question on the site. I also contacted you direct to say that the full remap was not off the agenda but I just wanted you to explain to me why it required a full remap when I'd been advised by a Skoda garage that it could have been reflashed. You did not get back to me.

I have actually recommended you to other owners as I believe you do a very professional job and you're a nice, polite fella to boot@!
