hello, I have a superb mk3 from the 2016 tdi 150 dsg. In cold (from the outside) it is heard like a cricket, I am going to put a video of a Seat like example, is equal.

Someone could tell me if it happens to you? (only happens in cold)
Thank you.

examples of noise.

Sounds okay to me unless I missed something.  Doesn't sound any different to mine on a cold start.  I also have that 'cricket noise' on cold sometimes but just assume its the various working parts as they are warming up.  There is a lot going on in there from cold between the belts, ignition, injectors etc.  If it becomes more noticeable it could be bearings in the water pump?  I had that issue on a MKII a few years back.

I was told some years ago when I had a Rover Sterling V6 that the noise was tappet noise, and that it would go away when the oil had warmed up. It did. I also experienced it on my Superb CR 170 Mk 2, as well as my current Mk 3 190d. It similarly goes away when the oil is warm.

It can also happen to an individual tappet if there is a block in the oil supply to that tappet. That is sometimes referred to as a 'lazy tappet'.

Apparently because of the thicker, colder oil when you first start, the hydraulic tappets do not pressurize properly. The gaps are not properly taken up until the oil is warmed up a bit.

Having been with VW group vehicles since 1971 until I retired last year, it doesn't sound like noise from the hydraulic tappets, not "metallicy" enough! & is usually heard from cold in higher mileage engines. Also the oil used by VW group is fully synthetic &  rated at 5W/30, so it really isn't thick when cold.

To me it sounds more like the solenoids "clicking" in the fuel injectors.

but, then is normal?

My considered opinion is yes it's normal & nothing to worry about!

If the injectors weren't clicking the engine simply wouldn't run!

Pumpe duese & later injectors are electrically operated (the ecu determines when & how long they phase ( open & close to determine how much fuel is injected)). No clicking simply means that they are NOT operational!

Two things are suspected. Have the same issue from 20k km and started digging it.

Main suspect - vacuum-oil (combined one) pump. Once engine is warmed up it stops.

This is example from a russian guy.

https://www.drive2.ru/l/10475273/

Having a discussion w/ him, pump was changed. After 6 months it started again w/ the new one.

This is taken from my 2.0 TDI Octavia starting from 15k km.

https://app.prolet.org/owncloud/index.php/s/MvWFEbPOn7Hhp0k

Check this thread for O3, a guy from Slovenia started it.

I've spoken w/ few people - they started hearing it once I pointed them ;)

As for the dealer - I got an answer like this 'all the diesels do it, some people hear it, some not. If you want come and we will change it and let's see'

Recently I came across YouTube with similar noise coming from the alternator. Same suspection - when cold it's not very well being oiled.

Will follow the thread, please update about your findings.

Good luck!

I have read discussion,.  I think it's the same that you (not russian o3 noise, this is different). it has to be the pump. Does anyone know where it is located in the engine exactly? the noise comes near to the distribution. its the oil pump or vacuum pump? or its the same?

The noise in my case is in cold and very light. If you have fine hearing you hear it.

I believe that all units with more than 15-20000 km have to sound in cold.

thanks

@jmgoan, what is your statement - you have the same as mine?

Which, according to you, is different than the russian guy?

Did I understand it right?

As for the pump - answer is - it's combined vacuum+oil pump. Russian guy has replaced it exactly it, after 6 months - noise is noticable again..

Please advice

yes, ok thanks..

In post -->

said that  replacement of this pump is not covered by warranty.  do you know?

I dont understand how is possible..  A new car with skoda revisions and 0-15000 kms no pump sound, and >15000kms the pump begins to make noise and skoda said is not covered by warranty.
