HELP: Test Drive for a 220PS DSG Needed

Ok I need some help.

I've narrowed my choice of superb to a Petrol 220PS DSG or a TDI 190SCR.

I know the colour, extras and spec level I want.   Just the engine.

I'm not interested in opinions about which would be best or other engine options.

I have looked at that in depth on this forum and elsewhere and these are my final answers.

I have test driven the 190SCR and have driven VAG group PD Diesels for the last 16 years and like them

HEART says TDI 190 DSG

HEAD says Petrol TSI220  DSG

I'm quite keen on the TSI from various viewpoints: price, no ad-blu complexity, less <10K miles/year, future gov attitudes on diesel inc Euro6

BUT

  • I cant push the button on an Engine I have never test driven.
  • The way a car feels and drives is intensely personal and is everything particularly for a car I'm keeping long term
  • Skoda John Clark in Aberdeen (and most of Scotland) only has diesels for test drive

Is there anyone in Scotland with a 220PS TSI superb (or petrol Octy VRS which has the same engine) that would be willing to take me out for a spin and perhaps let me drive for 30 minutes or so (with you in the car) to help me decide.

I live near Aberdeen and would be willing to drive around 2 or 3 hours to meet up.

Cheers

Darius

Can't help with that bud, sorry, and you can tell me to mind my own business if you like but i cannot fathom why anyone would choose a Diesel over a petrol unless fuel economy was the deciding factor.

Some will say it's about the torque of the diesel but i know my A4 petrol turbo had similar torque figures to a comparable size diesel engine but IMO the petrol was way nicer to drive and you could be very lazy with gear changes without issue. No problem at all with you choosing DSG.

Sorry to butt in.

Cant help sorry,

and maybe no interest to you, but West End Edinburgh have 3 Octavia vRS 230ps for sale.

John Clark Skoda Specialist Cars are not trying hard enough for you,

contact Skoda UK Customer Services and see if they can get you a road rest without you travelling to get it.

opposite :)
TDI gives only single pros:

fuel economy ~25%(money ~30%)

then comes several cons:
less performance;

more noise;

more smoke;

awful smell on hands after refuel

Re TDI's,

They will do twice the UK National Speed limit and keep up with any other traffic travelling at legal speeds. (speed cameras all around the OP's area)

Not much smoke if any with Ad-blue.

The noise is what it is, just like half the other vehicles around you, and not an issue when out in the countryside.

Wear disposable gloves if you use dirty diesel pumps anywhere.

Just a reminder - I've done enough research on the pros and cons of each.

Its now about how it feels to drive to me = that's a personal thing.

SO

I'm not interested in opinions about which would be best or other engine options.

I'm only interested in arranging a test drive.

I had a week long test drive of an SE L Executive with the 220PS petrol engine and DSG earlier this year. It should have been 3 days but they couldn't collect it sooner because of a bank holiday.

This test drive vehicle was sourced through Skoda UK.

So Skoda Customer Service can help - not a single 220PS available anywhere for a test drive :-(

Any Briskodian with a  220PS in Scotland want to help out ?

When I got a test drive in an SE L Executive I was given the option of 220PS and 280PS 4x4. The fact I was going to get a 1.4TSI meant I opted for the 220PS. This was in April and I had the car for a week - it was direct from Skoda albeit arranged via a dealer.

220 TSI All the way. Ive just hit 6k after coming from a BMW Diesel with simular power and have not looked back. MPG with mixed roads usually hit around 42-45 on 95oct which was pretty much the same as the diesel BMW.

If you just prefere petrol over diesel then jump on the quite train. The EA888 engine in this car is just lovely. Silky smooth, Quite but growls when you put the hammer down.

The car is swift for its size and never feels massive.... even though it is massive :D  You dont feel out of place doing 60 and some on the country lanes and on the motorway you might wanna set the limiter as cruising speeds feel much slower then they actualy are.

Id be happy for you to have a go in mine if you ever need staffordshire.... It always nice to be able to drive a car like you would in the real world without feeling like you on a drivng test.

Thanks Matt - I've near Aberdeen so a bit far.

Off to Edinburgh at the weekend to test drive a 230PS DSG Octavia VRS - should be okish for comparison given I drive an Octy just now.
