Lamp failed warning light

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could assist with this.

I've had a bulb failed light on my Fabia VRS dashboard pretty much since I bought the car in March. (the yellow light on the dashboard that looks like a light).

My local skoda (Croydon) have had a look but Im pretty sure they just reset the OBD just light I've already done several times with my Carista app.

The warning light only comes on when I put my lights on via the switch. If I turn it off the warning goes. I'm certain no bulbs have failed.

Any assistance would be appreciated - thank you.

Might be worth checking if you have multiple bulbs in a light cluster... Some cars have a pair of light bulbs so if one blows, you still have lights. Might be telling you you have a blown bulb even though it still 'Appears' to come on.

Otherwise, I'd suspect a faulty switch or even the bulb IN the switch!

You say also, only normal bulbs... Do you know this? Have you gone around the complete vehicle to see? Could be numberplate bulbs, signals, brake lights, tail lights, headlights, DRL, sidelights, interior including dash/switches etc. Glovebox, boot interior. Fogs, front and rear. There are quite a few bulbs involved in the average vehicle nowadays!

Headlight alone could have a few bulbs for dipped and main plus a pair of sidelights fitted in. My own headlight is a single filament bulb, with a shield that 'moves' to offer dipped or main beam but you may have twin filament bulbs and it only takes one to be inoperative...

While I am mentioning it, I believe that if the brake light switch is failing/fails, it can throw up a dash warning bulb. Might be this one. You should know if the brake lights are coming on but if the switch has an intermittent fault due to dying! Costs a lot to diagnose a £20 switch at a dealer as I found out once. They replaced two brake light bulbs that most likely blew due to the switch going wrong, replaced the switch and I think charged around £120. I am sure a clued up techie could have suggested I look there first!

I have this problem too and have heard other Fabia owners report it.  Mine started showing the bulb failure only in specific circumstances; whenever I had my wipers on (not any of the intermittent settings), as soon as I touched the brakes, the warning came on and would stay on until I switched the ignition off and back on again.

I've owned the car from new in 2011 and it has been that way since about 2013.  There are no failed bulbs on the car and they are all factory original.

Since June this year, the problem has changed so that now the warning light comes on as soon as I switch the lights on.  I've no idea what causes it but I'm not about to pay the garage to investigate it either.  If anyone has a fix for it I'd love to hear it.

I take it since it is a 2014 vRS you have no switch in beside the fuses that allows switching off the DRL's.

The DRL units can have a bad connection that throws up a bulb failure warning light,

but the DRL's still work, well when stationary, maybe on and off when moving.

?

Are both number plate bulbs OK, that is another common issue.

The other thing, are the 2 dummy blue sidelight bulbs still in the headlight unit, nobody has removed them have they?

Thanks for your reply’s guys - really helpful.

i must admit I’ve not checked absolutely everything yet.

for sure I’ve checked the rear number plate and side indicator bulbs (in the wings) and I did check all the back lights except the brakes lights.

im curious though, when I plug my Clarista Module in it says that my indicators are at fault yet they all work? How accurate is that?

thanks again,

Well, as Carista is just checking for stored fault codes, I'd reckon that a fault code has been logged and Carista has used its read across table and interpreted that fault as an indicator problem.

What exactly was the stored fault code(s) ?

Edit:- Carista is still learning about some of these cars, and might just have a wrong description against that fault code, I've had that on my wife's 2015 Polo, I think that it claimed an HVAC fault was a faulty ABS valve in the HVAC  system - I corrected them on that one as VCDS had correctly given the correct description.  Also, Carista was stumped when it was presented with an ICE On/Off switch faulty and just called it a manufacturer specific code.

Another Edit:- in other words, if you are doubtful about any fault codes being revealed by Carista, just Google the revealed fault code number as that will be true, then find out what is listed against that code as a description.

Thanks for the reply rum4mo. I will plug in again in the next day or two and check out the exact code whilst I’m checking the rest of the lights.

i do have LED bulbs in the interior/map reading bulbs (forgot about those) wondering whether to change them back to normal bulbs if it’s going to cause a problem.

Hi there everyone,

i was was wondering what the manufacturer specific code 04238 means on my carista obd diagnostic. I got the engine warning light up again today and it showed this code and the turn right and left control module code too.

should I get Skoda to replace the turn modules?

what does the engine code mean? Is it relating to misfires? The car is a bit shaky at low revs but appears to run ok once warmed up.

I use shell V power fuel.

many thanks All,

At least it tells you it is manufacturer specific -_-

Is there someone near you who can plug in VCDS or some other more specialised equipment? Maybe that gives you a better idea.

If you're having rough idles, check for air leaks, probably won't have any, but can't hurt.

Only link I could find with any sort of description: http://www.gerritspeek.nl/vag-com_dtc-03428.html

I have a thought (dangerous as it is). In a "traditional" relay driven circuit, the control side is what makes the contact (closes the switch) between supply and load side. It is the part which you activate by flipping a switch or pressing a button or whatever, before handing over control to the relay.

Maybe in this case it is similar. It appears that your command to indicate left or right is sent to the "onboard supply control module" this then sends it to the relevant lights. The control side goes from your indicator stalk to this module. Maybe a dodgy connector, dirt on the stalk contacts, wiring fault (my old favourite).

I could be barking up the wrong tree entirely here, but the naming of that code makes me think like this.

Thanks for your reply Lightrain. Your train of thought makes a lot of sense actually.

ive cleared all the faults for now but the indicator ones always come straight back on and the engine light came on a week ago so I will give the garage a call.
