1.6tdi coolant loss

2014 Rapid Spaceback 105PS 1.6Tdi has developed a thirst for coolant. I'd appreciate comments only from those with personal experience of this issue. Thanks.

You need to find the leak if there is one,

and if it is the Water Pump needing replaced that will needing doing and pretty soon.

How much?

~150 ml per year loss of coolant should not be an issue.

I've only ever had to top up coolant on vehicles that have had a fault or leak. I've had a series of VW and Vauxhall cars which required no topping up after 100,000 miles/5 years of use, and earlier BMC with no such problems after 6 years/70k miles (Except for a 1.7 Ital which was rubbish, as were other cars owned by relatives with the same O series engine).

 

But no problems with modern cars - Except

 

- an MX5 (1 cupful at 10 years/90k old).

 

- A Rapid 1.6 tdi - 1 cupful every 6 months. It's coming up to 4 years old and 47k miles. I'm concerned about the Rapid, and will get it checked at the next MOT. If its the water pump I will be very disappointed, more so than a leaky joint (though that shouldn't happen either).
