Question about Skoda speakers

Recommended Posts

Hi guys am looking to get a MK3 Octavia but one of the main things in a car for me is a good sound system.

I've read that Canton is the best one but there are HARDLY any cars with them for sale. The rest have standard system.

My question is how much would it cost say.. Halfords to upgrade the stock one?

Cheers

i was surprised with the poor quality, i had AC/DC (RIP Malcolm) at 3/4 volume in the Skoda and my wifes Kia Carens 4. The difference is night and day, the Kia is so much cleaner and crisper and the range of the mid to base is far better as well.

typically stock speakers are crappy paper ones. You could upgrade to any branded speaker JBL/alpine etc and it would be an improvement. i wouldnt bother with canton for the price. You could take it into any ICE centre and get fronts, tweeters and rears and a pancake sub fitted for a fraction of the cost of getting a dealer to upgrade you to a canton. access to the front/rear speakers isnt difficult and its just a matter of 4 screws and two crimped connectors.

forgot to mention i have 2 Alpine PDX Amp.s one 1400W RMSx2  for two 12" Alpine type -R subs, one PDX 150.4 for mid and tweeters, i have apline type x tweeters, 6s in the front and 6x9s in the back and the beetle bounces. i can do the hair trick at full volume.

just out of interest... you wont need a separate amp with this as its plug and play, and just access to the rear of the unit to connect the sub, the rest is just unscrew and replace. This is bargain basment option by the way. If you want to get really good sounds you would need to go the route of a separate amps, two ways, etc.

Wait, you're saying you don't need an Amp for your subs? How does this work? I put a huge sub in my old golf and that required a seperate amp.

Yeah i'll probably go for the whole shebang get Halfords or equivalent to put a decent sound system. I'd be willing to pay about £250 for it all.

most of the underseat subs have built in AMPs otherwise if your putting one in the boot buy a sub with a built in amp and do the extra wiring.

not for an 8 inch 300W sub, No. your head units built in amp should handle it but check the specs incase.  AFAIK most of the underseat subs have built in AMPs otherwise if your putting one in the boot buy a sub with a built in amp and do the extra wiring.

Okay mate thanks alot! I was going to get one of the elegance models as some come with Canton, but if it's easy to get someone to install it then that means I can get a VRs :D

you might have problems with stop-start, it would appear that the system is pretty sensitive to voltage.

@marko is currently installing a real system IIRC. I've got a C-DSP lying around begging to be installed, but time and effort and a lease car are conspiring against me.

personal opinion: Avoid Vibe. Avoid Halfords, talk to a specialist.

If you dont need/want stop start use the VCDS voltage mod to disable it.

totally agree with the avoid halfords statement. Find your local ICE professional installer/shop and work to a budget with them. Halfords are amateurs and wont stand by their work

don't agree with avoid vibe - always used their subs and amps and never had an issue

Hertz speakers are decent. With the skoda units they struggle with aftermarket speakers without separate amps

Ok so i wont go to halfords haha!

I've managed to get a lease deal on a brand new VRs WITH Canton for £211 a month (15k mileage) so might go for that.

I've got canton in my vrs. Decent sound. Good bass. But nothing to get too excited about. Good volume levels undistorted. I only got it cause it was in only 245 dsg available with no wait. Probably is worth the £500 if you like your music

Yeah am not interested in rude boy levels of bass/sound. Just a regular music lover that likes good quality sound (into pink floyd queen and stuff).

This is a how long a piece of string type of question.

Upgrading the stock speakers is only going to get you so far, as you will still be limited by the power output of the stock headunit.

To add an amp you will either need one that can take speaker level inputs, or a line level/dsp to convert the speaker signals to ones suitable for an amp.

Then it depends on if you want a sub or not, and how much you want to spend on speakers.

And not to forget sound proofing.

This is why going to a specialist would be a good idea, as they will have access to a broader range of kit and know how to install it.

if anyone wants a peak at what I'm building then here is the link! my main concern is how the battery management system is going to react.. standard the car has heated seats, heated rear screen, heater, xenon lights on and the battery copes fine with that lot?

On the face of it that sounds like a very good deal but presumably that amount is not amortised. What deposit was required for that?

Sorry made mistake, it's 211 a month without servicing or the Canton upgrade. Still the VRs TDI though.

Deposit is £2000, term is 23 month payments of 211 (15k mileage per year).

So really about £275 a month, but still pretty good for the mileage! I do similar mileage and always wrote off leasing.

Yeah i'm soon moving to a larger commute and in my current car (4.2L V8) i need something more economical.

Still deciding on lease or used. Do these cars last longer than 120k miles? There's loads in my budget but theyre 100K miles plus.

I went used - grabbed a 14k 3 year old petrol VRS with 6k of options (including Canton and Columbus) for £14k. Hoping it will last at least to 150 or even 200k without any showstopper issues. I saw the other day a Skoda rapid that was 2 years old with 400k on the clock. Was the 1.6 diesel and no idea what it's had replaced in that time, but still pretty good going!

A 100k example that's been serviced on schedule and well looked after should be capable well beyond 100k. Key is condition and not paying too much in the first place.

I can only imagine a 4.2L V8 is horrendous on the wallet for that sort of mileage. What you running?

Yeah good point and i suppose it's VW underneath so good quality. My mate has a golf thats got 170k miles on it and it runs perfectly because hes really taken care of it.
