Knocking from aux belt area

My car has developed a knocking noise from around the aux belt area/left side of the engine bay but only occurs when car is stone cold for a few minutes.

Fired it up today and listened carefully and its definitely coming from around the belt area. Sounds a bit like diesel knock but i'm fairly sure its not and has only recently started doing it. if i pull away slowly when manoeuvring out of driveway the noise turns to more of a thudding noise as the revs drop slightly. Once warm it disappears altogether.

Aux belt and tensioner were replaced about a year ago.

I will try get a video of the noise if possible but i know it will be hard to diagnose from just that. Are there any common points of weakness around the aux belt?

sound like it may be a sticky one way clutch on the alternator

I was wondering about the pulley on the alternator, does it need a special tool to remove and fit new one?

Yes. +1 for the pulley, try spray-lubing it up to see if the noise disappears for confirmation.

Ive seen a sort of multispline tool on ebay, is that the one i need to change the pulley?

Just an update for anyone who may view this thread in the future, I replaced the alternator pulley today, turns out the old one was completely seized solid so thats probably been my issue all along.

You should probably change the belt and tensioner at the same time although mine was only done last year and still looks pretty good.

Hopefully noise is gone now, will have to test on a cold start
