Rear cycle carrier (Straps) for Mk 3 Estate

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I need a cycle carrier for my Superb Estate.

The roof rack is full when on camping holidays, so no room up top.

Also the car does not have a tow bar fitted, so the normal tow bar mounted ones are not an option.

Looking around at the main companies (Thule etc) none of them seem to do an official version that will fit.

The closest I can see to a half decent universal rack that may fit would be the following http://www.pendle-bike.co.uk/shopping/strap-on-rack.php

Otherwise my only option is to splurge £600 upwards on a tow bar and carrier.

Which I would like to avoid if there is a safe strappy version.

Any pointers much appreciated.

I'm a towbar bike rack user I'm my estate, if i was looking to get a universal type, I would be comcerned about the rear window top plastic spoiler.. This overhangs the door and therefore a lot of pressure could be on this resulting in damage.  You may also have the issue of needing the electrics for a lighting board with reg plate too if you are doing it by the book.

Do the likes of Witter not do a cheaper towbar yet ?

(Only reason I got a factory option was at the time of ordering there were no aftermarket one available.)

Ok... Just looked..

£326 fitted for a detachable swan neck with 13pin (you may only want to go 7 pin) i would go 13pin with an adapter just to future proof ot with the universal electrics.. Don't bother with the deadicated kit if it's just for bikes only..

Still not cheap...

Then get one of these..

Had mine for around 5 years... Its great and can carry 4 bikes safely or just keep looking on ebay.

I use a Universal Rear Carrier i have had for a few years, it has been on Saloons, Hatches and Estates.

Just a £50 one, but i use it set with the top pad above the roof / hatch spoiler and the weight shared on the bumper.

Only put 2 bikes on and remove the front wheels and have them high enough no Light Board required, but i do fit a Tail Board with Triangles.

It is not hooks i have for the top of the hatch,

it is bobbins on the end of the straps and the top straps are tight when the hatch is closed. (hooks on glass with Duck Tape under.)

Sorry no good picture.

Now mulling over the idea of a custom rack built using kee klamps.

Would clamp onto the very back of the roof rails, then follow the angle of the rear window down (using a couple of adjustable elbows) then have the bottom rail rest on the bumper sill...

Looks like £150 in materials to build it out.

My main concern would be the practicality of getting it on/off the car and the weight of the frame.

(Could swap fittings to Alu for weight savings.)

I'll let you guys know if I go anywhere with it, and post pictures.

FYI

Got one of these and it fits well.

No pressure on the spoiler (hooks directly onto the roof rails) and is v adjustable.

It is a normal height back tube though, so bikes on it would cover the lights and reg plate.

However with the roof bar extension piece raised up, you can easily just flip the bikes upside down in the carrier.

Few ratchet straps, a spare number plate and jobs a good un...

No fiddling with electrics required.
