Octavia MK3 vrs springs on non vrs models??

Hi

Just wonder is anyone running MK3 VRS springs on non vrs Octavia?

My car is just 1.6tdi and got beam on the back, as far I know VRS models got independent rear suspension.

Will VRS springs fits cars with beam axle?? I'm quait confident that front ones should just bolt on but unsure about rears??

Want to lower my car slightly using OEM parts to keep decent ride quality.

Recently fitted vrs 18inch alloys and think car looks bit high now.

I know I can go for aftermarket lowering springs/kits but factory 15mm lowering works to me.

You can use Octavia MK3 VRS rear springs on the standard Octavia MK3. VRS rear springs are about 10% stiffer than standard. If you have an Octavia MK3 that came with a factory fitted towbar, then the VRS rear springs are the same stiffness as those.

The Octavia MK3 hatchback VRS rear springs will lower the rear of the standard car by about 15mm.

Wire Diameter 11,25 mm
Length 326 mm
Outer diameter 105 mm
Weight 1,65 kg

The Octavia MK3 estate VRS rear springs will lower the rear of the standard car by about 6mm. However, the exact drop will vary depending on the aftermarket brand that is chosen.

Wire Diameter 11,25 mm
Length 335 mm
Outer diameter 106 mm

Is that confirmed in real life or just from assumptions?  The standard rear end is torsion beam and the vrs is independent.  They could well work but I'd want to see more than an interweb confirmation.

Comparing the specification of the standard hatchback and VRS hatchback rear springs shows that the VRS rear springs are 22mm shorter when uncompressed. However, because the VRS hatchback rear springs have a wire diameter 0.5mm thicker than the standard hatchback rear springs they won't compress as much. I would estimate that for every 0.25mm increase in wire diameter, the springs compress about 4mm less under the car's unladen body weight. Hence rather than 22mm shorter, the VRS hatchback rear springs will reduce the unladen ride height by about 15mm compared to the standard hatchback rear springs.

The VRS estate rear springs will only reduce the standard estate's unladen ride height by about 6mm.

If you don't carry much weight in the rear of your estate and don't tow a caravan, maybe consider using VRS hatchback rear springs on your estate for that low sports stance.

If you look at the Bilstein online catalogue, it lists different parts for multilink and torsion beam suspension so I'd say they aren't compatible :)

The OEM part numbers for the lower underlay and upper underlay for both types of rear suspension are the same. This means that the ends of the rear spring coils are the same. Together with the similar specifications wire diameter, length, outer diameter, weight, and number of coil turns...they look very much two peas out of the same pod.

That doesn't mean the springs are cross-compatible or suitable...

From the two links you posted, all the torsion beam springs are 5Q0 511 121 xx and the IRS springs are 5Q0 511 111 xx.

If VAG could use identical springs for both (and save money), they would have and the part numbers would match :)

So I guess the answer is they will fit and function but there is no confirmation on whether they will perform correctly.

If it's a mild drop you want maybe eibach pro with audi spring pads on the rear is the way to go.  Although they are only 6mm or so thicker with the spring being half* way along the arm the actual affect at the wheel will be more (9/10mm?)

*this is a rough guess

If you really want to stick to OEM, take a look at the link Carlston posted earlier: http://www.oemepc.com/skoda/part_single/catalog/sk/markt/CZ/modell/OCT/year/2016/drive_standart/753/hg_ug/511/subcategory/511000/part_id/0/lang/e

You'll notice the torsion beam springs are grouped in three sets based on PR-code:

- 1JA Rear shock absorption basic design 1
- 1JC Rear shock absorption for sports design
- UC7 Rear shock absorption chassis with increased ride height

Assuming a car currently has 1JA, then going to the correct 1JC spring should give a suitable drop/stiffness increase. As a random example based on a car with PR 0YC.

1JA option would be 5Q0 511 121 AC:

- Wire Diameter    10,50 mm
- Length    352 mm
- Outer diameter    105 mm
- Weight    1,45 kg

1JC option would be 5Q0 511 121 AM:

- Wire Diameter    11,00 mm
- Length    321 mm
- Outer diameter    111 mm
- Weight    1,45 kg

UC7 option would be 5Q0 511 121 BC:

- Wire Diameter    10,75 mm
- Length    361 mm
- Outer diameter    108 mm
- Weight    1,60 kg

You can use the same method on the front end, bump stops and shocks to get a properly matched kit that's correct (according to VAG) for the vehicle dynamics/weight :)

That's not to say an aftermarket kit like the B12 wouldn't be better/cheaper.

The independent rear sports springs have an 11.25mm wire diameter and 7.5 coil turns.

The non-independent rear sport springs have an 11mm wire diameter and 6.75 coil turns.

If the number of coil turns were equal, the 11.25mm wire diameter spring would be about 5% harder, but because the 11.25mm wire diameter spring has about 10% more coil turns it's actually about 5% softer.

The spring with 7.5 coil turns should last longer than the spring with 6.75 coil turns because each coil turn is flexing less.

While I'm sure many of the springs Carlston posted will fit, I don't don't know enough about suspension and how the spring spec will effect the ride/handling to recommend any of them.

Given you can get factory lowered suspension designed/tested specifically for each weight range/PR codes, that seems the obvious option to me

Not much more I can add so I'll bow out for now :)

I've only found two Eibach Pro-Kit rear springs (F11-70-012-01-HA and F11-15-007-15-HA) listed for the Octavia MK3.

As you can see below, it's a one size fits all approach. The F11-15-007-15-HA model will even fit the Superb MK2 as well as the Octavia MK3.

No distinction is being made between independent rear suspension and non-independent rear suspension.

If this is your idea of tuning your car's suspension to perfection, then go for it. But to sell the same rear spring for the Octavia MK3 1.0TSI hatchback as the Superb MK2 3.6 V6 4x4 estate sounds a little imprecise to me.

As you can see below, it's a one size fits all approach.

I don't disagree that's what Eibach are offering...

I just don't believe that a single spring spec can be the optimal spring for such a range of vehicles. Especially given the number of variants Audi/Seat/Skoda/VW offer for the vehicles on the compatibly list :)

There is both a 1.2 A3 and a 3.6 V6 4x4 Superb estate on that list, surely they have different requirements from a rear spring!?

Absolutely, even for same model, Superb III in my case, Eibach offers different springs for different weights.
In case i don't like lowering, but would like to have stiffer springs,

i going to install springs from 2.0 TSI AWD on mine 2.0 TSI FWD car,
just one problem, i have managed to find right number for rear axle
F11-15-007-04-HA (-45mm on AWD; -30mm on FWD)
F11-79-008-01-HA (-30mm on AWD;  -5mm on FWD)

but which for front axle?
F11-85-043-01-FA or F11-85-043-02-FA

this guess has been made from these datasheets
-> Tuv certificate F11-85-042-03-FA
-> Tuv certificate F11-85-043-02-FA

compare by size
