Haldex Gen 5

Hi all,

I recently took my car into the VAG specialist - it's running a haldex gen 5 system which has stopped working. I was told that the haldex gearbox had become clogged up with metal filings and was causing the problems, so they cleared it out and seems to be working again. It's been well serviced - haldex oil changes every 30-40k miles as suggested.

Looking for any reasons why this might of happened and any preventative steps to stop it in the future.

I had my Haldex 5 fail at 20,000 Miles on my 2016 Superb. There was a TPI about it and they replaced the pump with a different version as per the TPI.

In you case, if the pump really was clogged up with metal filings, I’d be worried! Haldex s are not supposed to make metal filings. But maybe something was lost in translation and it was just clutch fibres?

If in doubt pay for an hour on Erwin and see if the TPI is applicable to your car, and/or ask the dealer.

?

How many miles has your Yeti Covered, is it out of Manufacturers Warranty,

and was it Main Dealer serviced & are you sure the the Haldex Service was done in the first 3 years or 30,000 miles?

Do not trust that a Service Plan or Full Main Dealer Servicing means that the Haldex or DSG Services are done on Schedule or by Guidelines,

they are 'Extra Cost', like the Brake Fluid changes.

What was it done at, was it 30,000 or 40,000?

Thanks for all the reply's. The car will not be covered under warranty I should think as the first haldex oil change was performed at an independent VAG specialist just after we bought the car at 46k miles at 3yrs old. The problems have since occurred 10k miles after that.

Since the independent garage has cleaned the haldex out (they described it as tiny metal filings) and performed another oil change the 4WD system has been working as normal (tested on a muddy track extensively). If the problem reoccurs then I guess will have to look at replacing the haldex gearbox!

Mine did exactly the same thing, just stopped working with no errors or visible faults. I dropped the oil from the haldex and removed the filter which was covered in a grey paste like substance which I'm guessing was very fine metal shavings mixed with the oil (if you wet sharpen a knife it leaves a similar substance). I just cleaned the filter and filled up with fresh oil and it has been perfect for the last 40000klms. I about to the same oil change this week along with the DSG, the little Yeti just keeps on trucking ....great little car.

Hi dieselyeti, I suggest you have a Haldex generation 4 or earlier, because this generation has a filter, whereas the generation 5 Haldex does not. At least this is what I have been told by the "experts". By the way you mentioned cleaning the filter; would you please inform me how you did this. Thanks from W.A.

My Golf has the gen 5 haldex & there is a filter on the end of the haldex pump, ive recently changed my haldex oil & i removed the pump to clean the filter as it was filthy. VW dont clean the filter they just change the oil,you cant buy the filter on its own (only as part of the haldex pump) so its not a serviceble item as such.

This was mine at 3 years old & 26k.

Indeed I have seen a method to service Haldex 5 and the way to drain the oil is just to remove the pump. Whilst out clean the built on filter.

Then replace pump, refill oil, drive a few miles and then top up again.

I bet this is not routine at a main dealer, particularly the short drive and top up again.

Looks a straightforward diy job.

Most if not all dealers only change the oil, most if asked dont even know about the filter on the pump,a test drive if the pump is removed is a must as it usually takes another 100ml of oil top up after the roadtest. Its a easy job up on a lift,it can be done on axle stands but would be a bit of a faff, main points are to make sure you remove the correct drain plug as the diff drain plug is easier to see & could be mistaken for the haldex drain plug, you need a small syringe & pipe to refill as the filler hole is small.
