Cracked car headlight - Replacing queries

Recommended Posts

Hi!

Have some questions regarding possible costs for fixing the cracked front headlight cover on the right hand side of my Octavia Estate. I bumped into a bollard very slowly whilst parking the car. The car is new, from 2017. Is this an expensive part to replace? I imagine the whole unit will need replacing. There's also a bit of a scratch to the bumper which perhaps a garage could help fix?

I live in Folkestone. Does anyone know of a Skoda/Volkswagen garage nearby or how I could find one?

Thanks in advance,

Lauren

Is it a facelift? Are they led or halogen headlights? Skoda only sells the whole headlight, I am afraid.

Don't mean to scare you, but at least the Seat Leon LED headlight is 700€, although arguably it is a bit more complicated than the one on the Skoda. If it is the facelift, might be one the arguing points (the split headlights...) might work in your favour to bring costs down.

If it is a pre-Facelift, I would suggest trying to source a whole headlight from a breaker, but it will still be in the hundreds, for sure.

Not quite sure I understand what you mean to be honest.

I think they are LED. The actual light still works fine, it's just the piece of plastic which protects it that is cracked!

Thanks

best contacting Skoda TBH.  I suggest you sit down before reading further...

Headlamps are normally sealed units. Our SEAT had a slight bump, thought it would just need a new bumper but was told the headlight had moved and a small plastic fixing at the rear broke (the plastic cover was unmarked - I didn't even realise the headlight unit had moved)

£150 for a bumper, £150 for labour and materials and...    £800 for a headlamp !!!  Ouch.

The Skoda units don't look as complicated as the SEAT ones but I'd expect them to be expensive all the same. I assume you're talking about a FL car as not sure Octavia offered LED pre-facelift.

Keep checking Ebay - you might find a used one being offered for sale.

Sorry what is pre FL

pre FL vRS

and FL?

I've recently inherited this car from my father... and I basically know nothing about it!

Thanks so much for your advice

FL means Face Lift.  Split headlights are facelift models (2017 on). The others are pre facelift. (2013 on).

The FL headlight assembly is one piece. It appears split only due to the trim.

Approx £400 from a dealer I believe.

pre FL = £44.

Wow!  Can I ask, where  you can source one from at that price?  My dealer has predictably quoted loadsamoney to replace a badly stone-chipped headlight that I haven't got round to dealing with yet. That is a much more attractive price.

Seems like such an extortionate amount of money for something which needn’t cost so much... surely!

Looks like I’m not in much luck with this, the car is a 2017 model, so looks like it’s ‘Facelift’... ridiculous!

Will look into some local specialist Skoda garages and keep fingers crossed...

Just doesn’t seem like something to lose my 9 years no claims over either!

What a pain.

Thanks for all your suggestions they’re super helpful I’ve learnt a lot, haha. Maybe fingers crossed I can wait and find a second hand one to take to a garage and have fitted, although maybe unlikely with such a new car!

Cost of FL LED headlamps has come up a couple of times now would be nice to get a definitive answer.

I reckon even a halogen headlight for a FL will be a bit pricey as be genuine Skoda is probably the only source.

Just spoke with a local garage who quoted £354.87 just for the replacement headlight. ouch!!

Much cheaper than the SEAT unit. Was that including VAT?

LED much more expensive than std because std is basically just a piece of plastic with reflectors inside. The LED unit is self levelling - it has ballast, all sorts of electrics etc.  That's not justification for the ridiculous price, simply why it's more expensive than std headlights.

there's the labour of taking the bumper off to get at the headlight so probably 2 hours labour? £70-80 quid

which light is that for?

Really? That's madness. On the MK2 you could remove a headlamp unit in a couple of minutes.

It's another "triumph" of styling over practicality - Audi made exactly the same mistake between the B6 A4 and the B7 A4.

Manufacturers don't care about repair times, just factory build times and styling.
