Question that Skoda couldn't answer

Hi all, the gf has a 2007 1.9tdi roomster and she hates with a passion the 16s it came with as standard with the 45 profile tyre's, so I'm thinking 15s would make it a nicer ride with bigger profile tyre's, I've found some 15" fabia alloys that have 185/60s fitted....... basically are they going to fit ok, believe it or not they're being sold by a Skoda dealer on eBay and I've asked the question and sent the reg plate so they had all the information and the reply was............ not sure they're going to fit !!! With no reason given

Can any confirm that they will fit or not

Thanks

Who replied, a sales / parts person in a Skoda Dealership, that is not Skoda that could be anyone.

Does a 15" Spare wheel fit, they fit on the biggest discs / calipers that Skoda fit on Roomster or Fabia.

if the wheels are 15" and 5x100 they should be fine, and just fit the suitable size tyres. & the Correct Speed / load rating.

Is it 205/45 R 16 that is fitted now and you want the slightly taller / bigger circumference 185/60R 15's.

Just changing for the small rim and taller sidewall might not give a nicer ride, it will depend on the tyres, what is in now or going on,

are the XL / Reinforced sidewall tyres?

Maybe the 10 year old suspension could do with a refresh, ie new springs / dampers.

Yeah it was beadle's Skoda in Maidstone but I suspect it's someone just answering the questions but surely they need to know what  they're talking about, yes your correct in the tyre size she has at the moment, it's more the fact she really doesn't like the lower profile tyre's, the ones being sold are 5x100 it was just the tyre size that I wanted to be sure about

Thanks Matt

Mine too;

If I recall correctly, the Scout spec models were OEM fit 16" alloys with the lower-profile tyres; presumably if the OP's car had factory-fit 16"s, they'd need to consult with their insurers to ask for approval to change to 15"s plus suitable tyres. And I'd guess the spare, if fitted, would also need to be swapped from 16" to 15"??

Richard.

A Skoda OEM Spare Steel for a Roomster has a 195/55 R 15 tyre does it not?

Is the 185/60 15 R tyre on a 15" rim not a type approved wheel size  for 1.9 diesel Roomsters and a size recommended if fitting Snow Chains,

so there should be no issues there with Insurance companies / Underwriters, and declaring them certainly should not need any bumping of a policy.

Having them fitted should certainly not void any insurance.

there are 2 different size of brakes fitted to a roomster  , one size will fit under a 14 inch wheel the other is 15 inch or bigger . if the car is on 16 inch you could drop to a 15 inch but not a 14 inch and if you 14 inch you can fit any of the bigger ones

Well this is a major issue and yes Skoda does not provide any reasonable answer to it. Below is my last e-mail to the factory.

"Dear Madams / Sirs,

I am a Skoda cars owner since 2002 and currently I own and drive a 1.2 / 77KW Tsi Skoda Roomster, owner since July 2010 bought brand new, and since then I am striving to find an answer concerning the tyre sizes of the car. So you are kindly requested to answer my question(s) and please do not propose to me to contact my county's importer or one specialist of dealers' grid, as I have already tried these solutions, as well as stressing these question(s) to independent car mechanics, tyre sellers / fitters, web Skoda club members and friends of mine  and I have not manage to obtain an answer accompanied by some kind of reasoning. So I am trying now to ask the manufacturer(s) of my car, as I believe that no one knows better than the manufacturer him/her self.

My car delivered to me with 195-55R15 tyres fitted, which is a dimension that is ridiculously over-priced. Looking for alternatives I looked at fuel's cap and owner's manual to find out that other replacements are 185-60R15, 185-55R15, 205-45R16 and 205-40R17, which apart from 185-60R15 are ridiculously over-priced as well. According to tyres manufacturers' responses on my questions this is due to limited market as these are not common dimensions.

Then searching the web and using some online tyre calculators I come up to the following results, that make no sense to me, especially concerning the 195-60R15 that I am interested in fitting to my car due to vast price gap.

My comparison queries were done using the 185-60R15 as the base dimension for comparisons :

1) Base vs 185-55R15, results a ca. 3,17% change that is not accepted as it exceeds 2,5% difference general rule for tyre size change. Recommended dimension by Skoda.

2) Base vs 195-55R15, results a ca. 1,26% change that is accepted (That is the dimension of the tyres when the car delivered and still follow that size after two tyres replacement). Recommended dimension by Skoda

3) Base vs 195-60R16, results a ca. 1,95% difference that is accepted.

4) Base vs 205-45R16, results a ca. 2,05% difference that is accepted, Recommended dimension by Skoda

And then comes the awkward result when comparing 195-55R15 dimension as base.

1) Base vs 195-60R15, results an impressive ca. 3.17% difference that is not accepted.

My questions are :

1) How comes for an alternative dimension to be simultaneously acceptable from one hand and unacceptable from the other compared to two dimensions that are both compatible and recommended by the manufacturer? That is for 195-60R15 compared to 185-60R15 and 195-55R15 respectively. The same results and question comes up when comparing 185-55R15 to 195-55R15 and 185-60R15 as the first comparison returns a ca. 1,85% difference and the second a ca. 3,17%  respectively, another paradox of simultaneously acceptable and unacceptable tyre size differences.

2) What will happen, if in the future I fit an 195-60R15 set of tyres in my car, apart from speedometer's difference? Will there be any other safety issues that are related to suspension, geometry, stability, cornering of the car? Will be there any damages in shock absorbers, springs, wheel bearings, steering rack or any other parts of the car?

Please keep in mind that since July 2010 no one was willing or able to answer my questions above, no matter if he/she was a Skoda grid mechanic, independent mechanic, tyre fitter, on-line Skoda club member, or a friend of mine, so you are kindly requested to help me find an answer.

I am fully aware that these questions are unable to be answered by information - customer care personnel, so I have no problem waiting for an answer from your RD or Mechanics team.

Thank you in advance for making use of your time.

Kind regards,

E********* G********, Greece "

Just to receive an answer that I should follow the recomended dimensions as the other is not homologated.

So questions remain un-answered. Any inputs are really welcomed.

Sweet jebus, is there not a lot of dimensions mixed into it all here?

I'm not in UK either. Our Scout came with 195/55R15 on summer tires, and I was foolish enough to opt for that again.

Then for winter tires, I made it for premium Michelin 185/60 - also on the 6J15 wheel.

For a tall Roomster, I must admit I do rather prefer the 185/60 on witdh relation wheel-tyre, and also they suit a tall Scout even better.

I seem to remember that when my wife had a 2002 VW Polo 1.4 16V 75PS, that it came with 195/55 x15 tyres, even VW changed that later on to 195/50 x15 again probably due to 195/55 x 15 not being a very popular/commonly used size, so costing silly prices when compared with other sizes, for some reason, I stuck with what VW had supplied that car with - maybe because I'm like that, the original fit Dunlop Sport tyres in that size were dropped by Dunlop before that car needed new tyres!
