Hi,

I've noticed that if the car applies the handbrake when I've stopped in traffic there is a distinct "clunk" noise as I lift of the brake pedal, it doesn't seem to matter how gently I come of the brake pedal. Just to be clear the scenario is in traffic, brake to a halt and the handbrake comes up, then as you lift of the brake pedal there is a clunk from the pedal.

Is this normal?

Thanks
Robert

There's been a few examples of this; I also had it on a previous non-VAG car. No actual effect - I don't even notice it these days. Ie nothing to be concerned about and seemingly nothing from VAG regarding Technical Bulletins or recalls.

Mine went in to the dealers last week for this issue. They 'changed some parts'

They couldn't have test driven the car as it loudly clicked when i was pulling out of the dealership.

Might go back, might not bother. It is bloody annoying though

Thanks both, I'm in the "its annoying" camp more than anything else. I like to drive smoothly and the clunk when I ease of the pedal just grates.

SkodaKing if you get any further with it I'd be interested to hear, my car is a 2019 so outside of the main warranty cover so dealers aren't going to be that interested unless I start paying!

Mine was looked at under approved used warranty and is also 69 plate. I will keep this updated

@rgrigsby Is it actually the e-brake / parking brake being applied, rear brakes only,

or is it 'Autohold' that is enabled and it is the front and rear brakes applied to hol the car? Different things!

It's only when autohold is turned on for me.

So not the Hand / finger / parking brake. Brakes though.

Ah that could be correct, I'll have to test and confirm but I suspect it's the same for me.

Yes fair point - autohold. Stopping at a junction/in traffic

When do you ear this 'clunk'? Is it when you precisely lift your foot off the brake pedal, or when you start pressing the gas pedal and exactly when the brakes disengage?

If it's the 2nd option, it may be related to the factory setting of the auto hold. I had modified it with VCDS to set the release of the brakes to 'Early' instead of 'Normal'. This enables smoother start and also avoids similar 'clunks' or 'creakings', when the car starts moving with brakes still on with the 'Normal' setting.

more information on this please!

Would it be possible with OBDeleven?

Interesting, in my car the noise is when I release the brake pedal after the car has stopped. I don't get a noise when getting back on the gas to pull away.

I'm going to try turning off autohold later today to confirm it relates to that but everything I've read suggests it is that (the P symbol in the dash is green not red for example).

@rgrigsby Have the brakes had any servicing other than look sees, like stripping / cleaning / lubrication

& has the brake fluid been changed?

Hi,

Only feasible on MY18 and onwards:

03-Brakes > Security access : 11966 > Adaptation 10

Select channel "IDE05055-Hydraulic brake assistant"

Set new value to "Early" instead of " Normal" as factory setting.

Then tick "soft reset" and save.

Done.

Enjoy at next stop sign or traffic lights. 😉

OK to confirm it's definitely the autohold that's making the noise, not the actual handbrake. Although driving the car without autohold in traffic is interesting!

@Ootohere I've only had the car a month, but looking at the service history it's had two brake fluid services, one at 32K and another at 66K. The car is currently on 68K, I can't see any record of new pads or discs, although it has a full Skoda service history so I'm sure they would have been replaced if needed.

It matters not if they have changed them because you are driving with what you have now.

Maybe a service of the brakes is in order, Strip and clean, or just a close visual inspection.

After all a car with a Full Main Dealer Service History might well only ever have had the brakes given a look see.

Maybe not the wheels ever off, even when there has been brake fluid changes.

Brake pads can get rusty, and brake discs get rusty edges.

it's 100% the pedal or pedalbox somewhere and not the brakes

Or the Accuators, that if the car moves while autohold is active apply more brake pressure.

Good that a Tech will be able to diagnose and then fix. Not just spay something on the pedal assembly.

@SkodaKing did you not get the part numbers for the parts replaced for your service & maintenance record.

An invoice even if a Warranty Repair so that future owners or techs can know what was done?

DATA Protection does not stop them showing the work sheet and parts to the person that actually owns a vehicle. & is responsible for its safety and maintenance.
