  1. Interesting thread and very encouraging as I am likely to move on from my VRS soon and wondered what to expect. We Buy Any Car suggested £2k and Auto Trader have black VRSs the same age as mine from £1500 to £4k which seems a little optimistic. What I have in my favour is low miles - 64k and long ownership to prove it, it needs the usual cambelt change and a few cosmetic bits to tidy up. I was thinking of the easy way out and trading it in as I didn't think there would be any demand for a smoky old tractor in today's politically correct and "green" world but obviously there is, so perhaps with the investment of some money to tidy her up for a private sale. Main decision is whether to remove the remap (at a cost of £100 or so) to get it back to "stock" or keep it in place. I'd hate a new owner to hammer the still standard and original clutch! I must admit it does still feel fast despite the smoke trail and seems to keep up with the newer cars well.
  2. Thanks for your help everyone. I had a good look today and apart from a little bit of deformation on the lower part of the casing (it doesn't quite clip together but you wouldn't notice unless you were looking for it), the mirror glass clips in OK and the motor works, so indeed this is just a mirror glass swap over, I have ordered one as suggested above for around £15 including delivery. Before being pressed back in: On a brighter note, my exhaust emissions warning light which came on a few weeks ago went off today - the knock must have done it some good
  3. Some ****wit smashed into my car on the way home today, causing the wing mirror to smash into the driver window and smash the mirror glass to bits, it's hanging off by the wires. They didn't even stop, when I turned around to give chase they started to drive like their car - also a Skoda Fabia Mk1 (the irony!!!) - was stolen, ducking into a housing estate, I got the number plate but decided due to the location and manner of their driving I probably DIDN'T want to actually catch up with them. Preamble over, my question: I realise I can pop into my local stealers and get this replaced properly, but can I do this on the cheap, specifically can I stick a £10 Halfords replacement glass in there? If so, do I need to do anything with the wires, given that I'll be going from a heated mirror to a non-heated one (don't want them to short out or anything). Or is that a bad idea? Anyone got a rough figure for my Skoda garage to replace this? Someone said in another thread £300+ which seems crazy.
  4. I wonder if I can ask about a new noise my VRS is making? As it's loud and worrying and we're currently in a remote part of Scotland a LONG way from a garage It started last week when going down a hill, in 6th, thought we were going to pull into a layby so slowed right down. Saw it was closed off so without really thinking put my foot on the accelerator (still in 6th) and there was a loud screeching noise, sounded and felt mechanical, from under the car somewhere. I took my foot off the gas and changed down, the car was then fine. A few days and a few hundred miles later, it made the sound again, and again I was going down a hill and had planted my foot on the gas at low RPM in 6th. The car accelerates fine from standstill with no noise. Once moving and under acceleration, the power is still there fine (I can overtake etc). It gets up hills fine. Since then I changed my driving to avoid too much acceleration at low RPM given that I also have a remap (and standard clutch etc), and avoid being lazy and using 6th on winding Scottish roads. However yesterday and today it did it again, once on each trip, both times now in 3rd gear, again after decelerating and losing RPM then wanting to accelerate again. So this seems to only happen under the extreme stress of lots of torque at low RPM. In total, twice in 6th gear and twice in 3rd gear. Never heard anything like it ever before. It's a loud sound! Any pointers for my friendly mechanic when I get home, and any re-assurance for me that I can still nurse the car around Scotland and then home? Is driving generally in higher RPM and avoiding accelerating too harshly a viable way to mitigate this for now or is this something that needs looked at urgently? Searches here suggest possibly a slipping alternator belt? If so, what happens if this completely goes? Will the car still drive? Thanks
  5. Great review, thanks for posting. Sounds like a super motor and a great colour too.
  6. Looks like we are in the same boat Paul. I'm going to ring them tomorrow and ask, because these figures don't mean a lot to me I don't want to end up with four wheels that don't fit. I will also see what my local Skoda service dept have to say. I definitely want 15 inch not 16 inch though. W14RRN - Looks very nice - Were they black to start with or did you paint them?
  7. Thanks folks. So, if I order new steel wheels I need "PCD 5x100, centre bore 57.1, offset ET38 to ET42"? When I look on mytyres at the other car models you suggested, their wheels are 57.00 - is that close enough to 57.1? Then for tyres I fit "185/55/15 or 195/50/15"? Or, does anyone know for 100% definite, on http://www.mytyres.co.uk/Steel_wheels.html which car make/model and then car type would be exactly the right size and type of 15" wheel to fit my vRS? It only lists by engine, not by model name (so I don't know which one would be a Fabia sport for example). Sorry about the questions, all I want is four wheels and tyres but this is all Greek to me!!!
  8. I think I might do the decent thing this winter and buy some winter tyres, but also a set of steel wheels so I can change over each summer/winter. I was hoping to find a numpties guide to doing this on a VRS here but there isn't one and a search for winter tyres gives lots of threads about tyres but not many about wheels. So please be gentle with me... ... Can anyone tell me in layman's terms, what size/type of steel wheels I need for the vRS (I think from what I have read so far, it's best to get 15" because the tyres are easier to get hold of, and cheaper)? I don't care what they look like. Yes I have standard VRS brakes. ... I am assuming if I ring my Skoda dealer tomorrow they will charge me 10 times the price for these? So any recommended suppliers who can order and supply the tyres and fit it all? I had a look on mytyres and they can do steel wheels with tyres, fully fitted, but as I don't know what size of wheel I need it's hard to get a price. Is there a better supplier? A mobile supplier who will come to me? ... will the four original wheels, with their tyres, fit in the back of the vRS when I come home from getting the steels fitted? Thanks for any help Basically I want a pain and hassle free experience where I hand over some money, and my VRS comes back with winter tyres fitted to steel wheels
  9. I did that no end of times when I first got my Fabia 6 speed. Also when jumping into the other half's 5 speed, putting in into reverse at 60mph thinking I was changing from 5th to 6th in the Fabia.
  10. Good link - I actually like that a lot (prefer the red version on that link above) though as with most things like this, not sure I'd want one myself. The Yeti seems well suited to cosmetic tweaks like this, because it has such a neutral look/shape to start with. However, not sure about the Skoda bright green interior on the Octavia Combo (see above link) It's, er, very green!
  11. Great looking motor - those black wheels really suit the colour
  12. Hi everyone, My VRS passed its MOT today and also had a service. I was advised the brake discs will need replacing all around soon - front and rear. They do look a bit crap at the back and the car makes a noise from the rear when braking (more so if brakes very hot and overused on a drive) so I knew this was coming. The quote was about £320 all in for all four. Does this sound like a good quote as never had brakes done yet? This is from an independent mechanic and not a main Skoda dealer. Thanks!
  13. Great review Matt thanks for sharing that And glad you like it.
