  1. I had a corrosion problem with my Mk 1 Octy Estate on the tailgate near the wiper. The problem here is with the design of the rtear heated window rubbers which hold water on (I think) pre MY 52 cars. This was repaired fairly promptly (only a small arguement) by the dealer under warranty, but the repair was pathetic, with every single error that could have been made present. In my work I am an ISO 9000 auditor and cutting a long story short, the potential cost to a dealer of losing ISO 9000 registration is enormous. This is a very useful weapon to have ready, but you need to be sure of your facts before proceeding in this way. My dad came with me to a meeting with the repairers and the warrany man from VAG. He said to me afterwards that he had never seen anyone wipe the floor with people like I had. All I did was give them the opportunity to dig themselves a hole which they proved expert at doing. That was the only thing they appeared to be good at. The dealer has now gone out of business, but the old staff now work at a newer franchise in my area and still appear to be just as expert. The repair was eventually re-done by a man from the paint manufacturer, Spies Hecker and could have been a better colour match. The bodyshop however then placed the whole car in the oven and managed to melt the radio aerial. They replaced it with the wrong type and lied about the specification of these being changed by Skoda. I then had to advise Skoda Customer Service that I would be reporting the matter to the Police because the dealer had tried to gain a pecunary advantage by deception. Some people refer to this as fraud. The dealer then made a phone call to me asking me to hurry up and get the car back to them to be properly repaired. My suggestion is be prepared to stand your ground with people who seem to think that customers are mugs. Good luck.
  2. Tried to buy an Extinguisher from Caffyns Skoda in Tonbridge. They accepted my order without comment but will not allow me to take possession of the goods because "Skoda wont let them", because the parts concerned are "Dangerous" and need to be installed by them for £55. Good job I didnt pay up front. ;(
  3. My Scout has a setting on its MDF for a max speed warning which is to be used when Winter Tyres with a lower speed rating are used. If the car is designed to do this, then using alternative wheels and tyres is surely not a modification?
  4. Body 100% different except for the badge on the boot lid. Mechanics 100% different except for the smaller engines. Suggest a download from Erwin.com (needs the specific VIN number) or Manuals4cars on e-bay.
  5. Thanks for all the guidance and help from all those who wrote. My experience with Caffyns was not what I had anticipated. The issues are genuine and the instruments used for my test were calibrated and I was aware that the car was QG1... Portslade is a bit too far but Sidcup isnt so I will continue to use Saunders Abbot in Sidcup for all my future after sales servicing and parts etc, but thanks for the suggestion. For the record, according to ErWin, 11.9v is 4.8% below mininimum voltage (12.5v) when the dealer should investigate and they say, "If the battery is N. O. K., replace the battery". I suspect therefore that this is a warranty issue after all. Thanks again.
  6. It cranks ok and seems to start OK. I check the voltage because having had the battery fuse box almost catch fire due to the inherent design fault on Mk 1 Octavias, the voltage as displayed by my GPS was low <10v - even with the engine running and this useful voltmeter display prevented me losing the car at cost to me. Now i check the voltage often on all my cars. Erwin suggest if the voltage is below 12.5 that the fault should be investigated. Car is 18 months old, purchased 3 months ago, OEM sealed battery, not really cold. Cant understand why i had to resort to a letter to Robert Hazlewood (MD of Skoda UK) but I am assured by Skoda HQ that Caffyns will be performing the investigation i asked them to do when taken for service. After all Skoda manufacture happy drivers.
  7. See my post "Warranty Woes" in the Octavia II area.
  8. I purchased a used Scout TD from Caffyns in Tonbridge - Previous Owner was Skoda HQ. When doing my safety checks I noticed the Battery no-load voltage was 11.9v. The car was due to be serviced. i described the problem asking the service technician what voltage i should expect. He aske "Why what have you got". This irked. When the car was returned, the problem still existed. Following some strenuous discussion involving Skoda's "assistance" line (the Caffyns service receptionist had got to the end of his knowledge) I seem to be left with a problem that could be so easily solved if only the correct approach was taken by the garage. Can any reader suggest a source of competent, if not expert advice on this sort of thing in the West Kent area? On further examination, it seemes that the previous owner had not followed their own servicing requirements. (2000 miles and five months late). Can anyone suggest what impact this would have on the warranty?
  9. This happened to me on my 110TDI. The problem is known to Skoda and there is a design fault that causes the loom in the immediate vicinity of the large fuses on top of the battery to arc and melt the plastic in this area. Skoda paid for all the new parts but not labour to have this repaired. I was able to identify it before a failure as i have fitted a volt meter and it was reading below 11v with the engine running. You will need a replacement alternator to battery charging loom and battery fues box - cost about £100 18 months ago.
