  1. I have a June 2010 model done 70k miles. Had new water pump under warranty but nothing else major.
  2. Same thing happened to mine.Sprayed the base of the handle (the slidy bits in the slot) with WD40. No problems since. Alan
  3. My Scout deisel had the same issue. Car 2 1/2 years old & 60k miles. Water pump & cambelt replaced under warranty.
  4. If it's a trapped stone, you can sometimes remove it by either slaloming the car fairly violently, or reversing at high speed. That's how my son & I got rid of ours. Suggest you use a quiet road though
  5. The service countdown has started on my Scout, and as with all other Skodas I have had, the 100 mile maxidot countdown goes down faster than I am actually clocking up miles. The Skoda agent has told me that I am allowed 1000 miles to get the service done once the service due message appears. The question is which 1000 miles is she talking about? Maxidot or actual? Because I have had to undertake an unplanned journey I will be nearer to the 1000 mile limit than I thought, but if I go by the short miles that the maxidot uses, I may be over. So how do they tell whether the car is over this 1000 allowance when it goes in for service?
  6. I noticed that the lens on my offside DRL on my 11 plate scout (fitted as new when I opted for xenon headlights) must have been hit by a stone and cracked. Is it just a lens replacement or does the whole unit need peplacing? Being an incompetent myself I will need the garage to do it for me. Is it an expensive job? Thanks
  7. Does anyone have one? I am thinking of getting one as insurance in case I have an accident. Any recommendations? Can I use a power splitter from the cigarete lighter socket so I can run a cam and my TomTom at the same time? Anyadvice welcomed please,
  8. Now I know I'm a wimp - just ask the wife - but I have had to top up the oil in my 2011 diesel Scout a couple of times, and I have been unable to turn the oil filler cap without the aid of a mole wrench to grip it and twist it. Is it just me or is there a knack to it that I haven't discovered? Or is it just a case of RTFM? Alan
  9. The IAM recommends that tyres are changed when the tread gets below 3mm. 14 October 2010 The IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) urges drivers to ensure their tyres are in good condition, rather than wait until surface water, frost or snow turns the road under their wheels into a skid pan. As tyres have only the area of the sole of a shoe in touch with the road at any one time, it’s a safety ‘no-brainer’ to keep them in top condition, and extra care is needed at this time of the year when sudden heavy showers can profoundly affect tyre performance. More roads will also be worn out due to cut-backs on resurfacing, and this combination with worn out tyres is potentially lethal. Peter Rodger, IAM Chief Examiner, said: “Under-inflation causes excessive tyre-wear, with every ten per cent under the recommended optimum decreasing tyre life by ten percent. “Vehicles of drivers found to be at fault in high-speed accidents were found to be six times more likely to have worn tyres than those of the other drivers involved*. Keeping your tyres maintained is an important part of car-care, not only for safety but also for fuel-economy; under-inflated tyres will increase fuel consumption.” Mr Rodger gives some simple tips on checking the condition of your tyres: Check the general state of the tyre for cuts and bumps on the tyre wall and uneven wear Check that your tyres are correctly inflated (ideally when they’re cold) – you can find the recommended pressure listed in the car’s handbook, or on the manufacturers plate, fitted in many cars The legal minimum for tyre tread in the UK is 1.6mm, but for optimum safety you are advised to start looking for replacements if the depth is below 3mm. Tyres with less than 1mm of tread depth have one third the braking friction of one at the bare legal min of 1.6mm, and below 3mm the tyres skid resistance begins to decline rapidly Just because tyres are legal, they still may not be at an optimum for braking safely in all conditions. When there is a 2mm film of water on the road, even 2mm of tread may give no better stopping friction than a bald tyre*. Have a quick look over your car once a week to notice any changes, and get your tyres checked by an expert if you are unsure. HTH Alan
  10. Dorset Fire & Rescue Service now have at least 1 of these, and the Ambulance Service has one. Someone I know who deals with their vehicles says he is so impressed, he is ordering 2 more for the fire service!
  11. When I picked up my new Scout, the agent (Loders in Yeovil) filled up the tank at Asda!
  12. Do the headlights run a self test if they come on when the light switch is in the auto position and the lights come on because the ambient light level drops? I ask because on my journey to work I pass under trees and the lights go on then off, then on again. I would have thought that a self test when the car is moving would be dangerous and probably illegal! :wonder: Alan
  13. It doesn't nag. It doesn't complain when I've been to the pub It doesn't give me a list of jobs to do It doesn't cost as much to run I'm always right ...
  14. You could always give 1/2 flashes on the hazard warning lights instead. I'm a fan of the three flashes personally. Alan
