  1. Ooops, I didn't pay attention to the video, and, definitely YES, that's the noise of a defective cam chain tensioner. I agree completely with Hussein, go and have the car serviced as soon as possible, to avoid further damage. Remember: - check they are going to install the latest kit from Skoda (in Italy is V 03F 198 158 B, I do not know about UK, it could be different); - check they are going to replace all relevant parts (chain, tensioner, etc.); - if you've had the car regularly serviced, ask for a good contribution...everybody at VAG knows about it!
  2. Second hand or new? The roomy with the 86 or 105 hp tsi engine is a fine car and I am very satisfied with it. If you buy it secondhand just be sure the timing chain issue has been checked by skoda service, and in case appropriately dealt with. Search this forum if you have not heard of it before: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/352998-skoda-fabia-12-tsi-engine-rattle-noise-anyone-had-the-same/
  3. Hi, My April 2011 roomy had the same issue and after some investigation it came out it was the infamous timing chain problem (tough my engine s/n wasn't in any official notice). I have been lucky since I have had the latest Skoda kit fitted with no charge; when I bought the car I also signed for the 4-year extension warranty......you never know! I'd say, if you're out of warranty first try the rattling fuel line hoses fix. It is easy and if it works you will find a no-cost solution. If the noise is still there, have the car inspected. Skoda services know how to check if the timing chain is stretching out of its given limits. If this is the case,if you have had the car regularly serviced at Skoda, you should be entitled to some discount since the problem is well known and affecting many 1.2 tsi engines. Good luck ;-)
  4. Please re-read my recent considerations and forgive my presumptuousness #15 #18 After all, in cars 'form follows function'. Or not?
  5. Also consider the funny, practical and sturdy Qubo: http://www.fiat.co.uk/uk/fiat-qubo?status=0 It's van-based, I considered buying one at the time, but chose Roomster mainly because petrol engines' choice was very weak for the Fiat and curtain airbags were not available. The availability of curtain airbags is another sign of different project priorities: Roomster has been primarily designed as a people carrier and a proper car, Qubo as a light commercial vehicle and secondarily as a family car.
  6. Laws can be significantly stupid even in pragmatically savvy Anglosaxon cultures and countries (we Mediterraneans know something about absurd and contradictory laws...)
  7. It could be your wife inadvertently activated the 'comfort' option: if you keep pressed the unlock button on the remote, all windows will open, if you keep on pressing the lock button all 4 will shut. Otherwise, if (and only if) just one or both rear windows stayed open, it could be a known issue with Roomster's back windows. See: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/197688-electric-window-problem/ It especially happens using the remote function - see above - when closing the rear windows, the anti-pinch re-open them because of exceeding friction between glass and rubber seals. Common fixes are lubricating seals, keeping glasses very clean, waiting for new seals to wear a bit and adapt.
  8. I really like the front 'sports' seat, currently unavailable for Roomsters in Italy You can only get them on Fabia vRS or Montecarlo models. They really seem to be more comfortable than standard ones.
  9. The silver interior finish is really beautiful. Don't you have children, have you?
  10. Just to add a bit to the conversation, most audio experts say there is a certain sound improvement just by installing a real crossover into the original audio system. Actually, in basic VAG group audio systems there is no crossover splitting high and bass: http://www.seat-altea.it/html/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1358&sid=3197658877fb2f4d8ee52ff14589eaf7 (Sorry I only found Italian sources, I am sure you will find something useful in English )
  11. As others said, I warmly advice having factory fitted roof bars. Still do not understand why they are not stock, since it is the only way to carry anything on the roof.
  12. Well, the crucial difference is winter tyres vs. NO winter tyres. Then, you can reasonably select among different offers and models without being too choosy. My advice is recent production date (but winters are practically built to order, nowadays) and narrow tyre section. If you read German, Italian of French this should be THE site for winter tyres tests: http://www.tcs.ch/fr/test-securite/tests/pneus/hiver.php
  13. Under 7-8 °C and especially with ice and snow, winter tyres are a must for the safety conscious driver. The first time I fitted a set, I thought: How could I do without them, from now on?
  14. I usually fit 185/60 15" winter tyres and I am satisfied. Slightly more comfortable than stock 195/55, I do not feel substantial differences in handling, apart from some 'gummy' feeling. Cheaper. Advisable, unless not allowed by regulations (in Italy, they can only be fit as winter tyres for the Roomster).
  15. If you need it, get it now. Of course you can save more in a near future but cars are the kind of goods you get the moment they are really useful, thinking rationally. It could also be when the model is officially discontinued you will have a narrower choice of engines, colours, trims....is it worth it?
