  1. I often do a trip from Devon to Yorkshire and usually achieve an average of 45mpg. Driving around locally with a mixture of town driving and dual carriageways I average around 40mpg. I am always gentle on the accelerator and certainly don't drive like a boy racer. I have found that the most economical speed is around 60mph, although that would be impractical on the motorway.
  2. I have exactly the same problem where bird **** has burned into the paintwork on the bonnet. Also, I do a lot of driving down narrow lanes where it is impossible to avoid brushing against vegetation. As a result the sides of my car are covered in minor surface scratches. I have never had this happen in any other car, and can only assume that the top coat of paint must be extremely thin.
  3. I have a 2010 Octavia with the DSG gearbox and have today received a recall letter, part of which reads as follows: "As part of regular product monitoring, Skoda Auto a.s. has found that in vehicles with a DSG 7 Speed Gearbox filled with synthetic oil, the synthetic oil used can lead to an internal short circuit and to the blowing of the fuse for the Gearbox. The failure causes the clutches to open and the vehicle freewheels. The functions of all other systems (e.g. engine, steering, brakes and lights) are not affected." I have been asked to take the car in for the oil to be checked and if necessary replaced with mineral oil, so it may be advisable for you to check with your local dealer before changing the oil yourself.
  4. I've had my 1.4 TSi Elegance for 4 years, having bought it new. In that time I've not had a single thing go wrong. I still can't believe how powerful it is for a 1.4 litre engine. Prior to this I had a 2.5 litre Volvo V70 and the Octavia in my opinion has far better performance. My only complaint is that the seats are hard, especially compared with the Volvo, but this tends to be the norm for German designed cars. With regard to fuel consumption, I average about 40mpg on a mixture of town and motorway driving.
  5. I had exactly the same problem on my Octavia, but the dealer could find nothing wrong. As usually happens, it worked perfectly whilst they had the car. However, when I collected the car from them I found that they had somehow changed the settings so that the mirrors now unfold when the driver's door is opened. I have had no problems at all since this change was made. It may therefore be an idea if you get your dealer to make this change for you.
  6. Yes, mine does the same. I queried it with the dealer and was told this is normal and they all do it.
  7. I have a 1.4tsi, albeit the estate version. I have found it to be an excellent car, my only complaint being that I find the seats to be too firm, making long journeys somewhat uncomfortable. With careful driving I am achieving an average of 40mpg on a mixture of town driving and dual carriageways. Hope that helps, Dave.
  8. I have never used the Exeter dealer but have always used Murray in Newton Abbot. I can thoroughly recommend them - excellent service.
  9. I have a 1.4 TSI Elegance with electric driver's seat in leather. Like you, my previous car was a Volvo V70. The seats in the Skoda are quite firm and I find that they can be quite uncomfortable on a long journey, but I think this is typical of German designed cars. Volvos are well known for the comfort of their seats and I think there can be no comparison between them and Skodas. Regarding the lumbar support, as I have posted previously the manual lumbar support on the passenger seat is useless, and my wife gets backache after a long journey. However, the electric adjustment on the driver's seat is much better and you can definitely feel the difference when it is adjusted. It is a shame that an electric passenger seat is not an option on the Octavia. Overall, the Octavia is an excellent car that I feel is let down by the seat comfort. I know that other owners do not agree with this, but perhaps this is because they have not experienced a Volvo. The reason I changed from the Volvo is because the Octavia is certainly much more economical to run, which I suspect is why you are considering it. You have to choose between seat comfort and economy, but you can't have both! Hope this helps.
  10. UPDATE After a bit of chasing I have finally got an answer from Skoda, and they are not prepared to do anything. No surprise there then!
  11. Re your last paragraph, I have the 1.4 TSI Elegance Estate (DSG) and have been very pleased with it. You certainly get a lot for your money. I do a mixture of local and motorway driving and get an average of around 40 mpg, although I do drive it gently and never put it into sports mode. When I ordered the car, the dealer only had a 2-litre diesel demonstrator, so I wasn't able to test drive the 1.4 TSI. I was a bit concerned that the 1.4 may be under-powered, but I needn't have worried. My previous car was a 2.5 litre 20 valve Volvo V70 but the Octavia actually out-performs it! If you are having the DSG, I do find that you have to be really gentle on the accelerator when pulling away from standstill, otherwise you pull away with a jerk and squealing tyres and everyone thinks you are a boy racer. Once you get used to gentle acceleration it's fine. If I have any gripes about the car it's firstly that I find the seats aren't particularly comfortable. They are very hard and there seems to be very little padding in them. If you are having manual seats I find that the lumbar support adjustment wheel does absolutely nothing on my manual passenger seat, although the electric adjustment on the driver's seat is much better. Secondly, although the engine is extremely quiet, you do get quite a bit of road noise through the tyres. I always find it is a pleasure to come across a newly laid stretch of tarmac when the noise stops. Don't let these things put you off the car though. Overall I think it's a great car and certainly worth the money. Hope this helps.
  12. I also have ivory leather and tried to get ivory mats when I ordered the car, but unfortunately Skoda no longer do them in ivory, only black.
  13. Thanks alberg. I'll go back to the dealer and get them to change from headlights to foglights. It seems to me that most Skoda dealers are extremely helpful but they just don't have the product knowledge.
  14. I have a 2010 Elegance with Maxi-Dot. My dealer activated the DRL's for me, despite originally saying it couldn't be done. However, when I collected the car from them I found that instead of the lights in the foglight housing being on, they had actually activated the headlights to be used as DRL's. When I queried this they said it had to be that way because I have Xenon lights. Does any one know if that is correct? I am concerned that there will be additional wear & tear on the Xenons by continually starting the engine when they are already on.
  15. I have had my Octavia for just over 12 months and agree that the lumbar support control might as well not be there. Having changed from a Volvo V70 I was expecting that the seats would not be as comfortable, but not as bad as this. I have electric lumbar adjustment on the driver's seat which works reasonably well, but the manual adjustment on the passenger seat is useless. I have also found that the seat heater on the passenger seat does not work as well as the driver's seat. When the car was in for its first service last month I got the dealer to have a look at these problems but they say there is nothing they can do. Regarding the seat heater, they say there are less heating elements in the passenger seat than in the driver's seat. Why? The dealer suggested that I take these issues up with Skoda Customer Services, so I have emailed them and am awaiting a reply. I have suggested to them that it may be possible to exchange the passenger seat for an electric driver's seat from a left-hand drive vehicle and I would be prepared to contribute towards the cost if this could be done. I will keep you posted on the outcome.
