Strange "grinding noise"

Featured Replies

The other day when setting off i noticed that there was a strange grinding noise coming from the NSF wheel.

This only seems to happen on and off at speed up to 40mph and occurs in or out of gear.

I poped the front wheel off just to check there was no stones lodged in the discs etc but the only think i noticed was that the disc seems slightly "warped" but the pads still have loads of life left in then!

Could this be a possible joint or wheel bearing problem? I want to have a rough idea before i go to the dealer which wont be until next week!

Any help, advice welcome!

Oh, its a 56 plate 1.9 octavia estate.

I suffered from NSFW "mystery grinding" with my 53k VRS. Some possible causes are:

1. Tyre noise (dealers are keen on this)

2. Brakes binding / warped discs

3. Wheel bearings

4. CV joints

5. Center carrier bearing

As my car was bought used under warranty, I managed to get a wheel bearing, CV joint and the center carrier bearing replaced for free which cured the problem. This came after I was repeatedly told by another dealer that it was 1. then got stung for 2!

If the noise gets worse when turning at full lock (try in a quiet car park), that points more towards CV joints/ driveline. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try the car park test in the morning!

I think i'm looking at one of the last 3 problems - I guess that's not going to be cheap!

Had a similar problem. As an experienced DIYer I immediately diagnosed a trapped stone. However after a good look at the brake calliper with the wheel off I could not see a stone. As the car was in warranty I went to the dealer who suspected the known steering rack problem and booked it in for a check. They gave me back the car, a stone(neatly polished on one side) and a £50 bill:(

I was pleased my diagnostic skills where still good but less pleased about the £50.

Suggest you have really good look for a stone, you may need to remove the calliper.
