My bonnet release cable has snapped (no resistance and fails to self retract). How do I manage to release the bonnet catch?

Dismantle the release lever in the footwell and se if there is any inner cable to pull on with pliers/grips. In any case pull the inner cable out to see far how along its broke.

I have now tried this. Inner cable pulls out about 2 cm and stops. I must be a weakling - I cant pull out anymore of the inner cable but the bonnet refuses to release

Any other suggestions?

I am going to wait until a new cable arrives before trying again- no point getting it open if I have to shut it again with a faulty cable still in place

Problem solved. Turns out that the bonnet end of the cable had become detached (possibly during a recent garage repair job) and was being pulled against the end-stop. The garage remembered having had difficulty in re-closing the bonnet. They opened the bonnet by access from beneath the engine and re-attached the cable.
