Insurance ****-up

Featured Replies

Had the octy 10 days, used up the 7 days free insurance so I decided to get a few quotes - As there is currently a dispute ongoing, I'm not mentioning any names..

As that fat bloke from Go Compare is really annoying, I thought I'd use the cute n cuddle Meerkat version. so I went onto their website, entered my registration number, got the details back from them and did a few quotes (NCB Protected = yes, Legal Protection = yes, etc).

I found a cracking quote so went to buy it.. On their website, I even changed from the cheap n cheerful quote to the all singing / dancing quote (which includes breakdown recovery - which I already have with Skoda - but what the hell...)

So I bought the insurance and got the confirmation emails, brilliant I thought.

Then, I got the policy documents through the door which state (as they all do) - "Please check the details thoroughly and inform us of any amendments".

As I'm reading down the policy I noted that there were 2 issues..

1. Fuel type is wrong.

2. No alarm is stated.

So I called them to inform them of the issues and was informed that I would have to pay a policy administration amendment fee..

WTF?

I have checked with the price comparison website, and xx10 xxx shows my car as the correct make / model / engine size / fuel type / transmission type / etc.

I did a quote directly with "no names" insurance, and they have xx10 xxx as the correct vehicle..

So how the hell has it suddenly changed? I called them and have been informed that I must have entered the wrong details when comparing... As the details are obtained from DVLA and a lookup is used on my registration - how is this my fault?

I don't mind paying the difference - e.g. I'll pay for my vehicle..

What I don't want to do is pay for someone else's mistakes in the way of an administration charge..

I have emailed the insurance company with screen shots and am awaiting a reply.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any advice?

Tell them they can waive the charge or you will use your right to cancel as it''s obviously their mistake.

Got a letter through this morning advising me that in this instance they are waiving the admin fee and it is purely at their descretion. It said nothing about their system mucking it up..

At least now I have the policy documents which set out in black and white all the rules..

If you had not checked your details, and had them rectified, they might well have voided your insurance in the event of a claim, perfect case for them to wriggle out of payment.

The excuse that it was computer error is used to cover their mistakes, computers don't make mistakes they only do what they are told to do.

The irony is that I'm a software engineer, I've just finished writing a price comparison system for brokers for taking out Buildings and Contents insurance. So I've had to study the insurance business (albeit contents insurance).

So when I tried telling them, and showing them that there was no way I could have made of the mistake, I was dismissed as it being my mistake. I only hope their Customer Services and Claims dept's are better than their Sales dept.
