At present I am running my car on 225/45/17 and was thinking of changing down to 16" rims and getting winter tyres, as I can pick up a set of 4 new steel rims at a very good price. My question is, what size tyres should I go for, on these rims, to keep speedo as accurate as possible?, should they also be 225/45, but on 16"s, or something different.

205/55R16 tyres seem to be available with either a 91 or a 94 Load Index, similarly 225/45R17.

Check the VIN plate to confirm the maximum axle weight requirement and hence the minimum Load Index requirement.

91 corresponds to a maximum axle weight of 1230 kg, or 1118 kg if you want to include an extra 10% margin.

94 corresponds to a maximum axle weight of 1340 kg, or 1218 kg with the extra 10% margin.

On the VIN plate, the front axle is axle 1.
