MAKING A RALLY SKODA

Featured Replies

Hello to all!

I am preparing an Skoda Estelle for TSD rallying and I've seen an interesting installation for my car on a Filckr photograph. I attach the picture , do anybody know how to do this installation?

Many thanks for your help

With best regards.

We'll probably can help with preparation if you can post some details of class rules.

For example, do you have to retain the Jikov or not? If not, do you have to retain the manifold, or could you change it for a side-draft manifold? Is there a restriction on the number of chokes you can run?

Could you dump the stock induction, exhaust and ignition systems to run a fully mapped engine?

basically I can run with the stock engine and all in factory configuration, if you know this kind of rallies you have to maintain an average speed as accurate as possible, maximun is 50 km, so will not be a big deal for the engine.

The important thing is instruments, if you see the picture there are twin gauges for pilot and co-pilot and I think it is a neat way of keep the car as close to original state, that's what I am searching.

The thing I do not know how to install 2 speedometers on same cable if there's a way to do it.

Brgds.

Ah, what we'd call a "regularity event" in the UK. In that case, I'd agree that the engine has enough power (probably; some UK regularities need a good driver with something like an Escort RS2000[road car; not a stage rally machine] to make a 30mph average after stage plotting).

That photo looks like they've literally just fitted a second Estelle instrument binnacle on the passenger side.

If it's allowed, I'd suggest using something like a "Halda twinpilot", which will include things like the split speedo drive, and can be correctly calibrated. Your stock Skoda speedo is almost certainly going to over-read by as much as 10%, which is an event-losing amount.

Lots of people seem to use Brantz timing clocks on rallies in the UK, so it might be worth having a look at their web site.

Hi all,

finally we solve the situation installing 2 bicycle speedometers connected to front right wheel. It is cheap and works pretty wheel, maybe in future we will go further to any better equipment.

The engine went good enough for the speed, but I will like to get some advise from you.

The car has an 130 4 port engine with there original 4 speed gearbox, goes very well in general, but we the road goes uphill it suffers form lack of power, and can not maintain 50km/h going down to 30km on 3 gear.

Making us go downhill dangerously fast to recover the time we loose.

Do you have a good idea so we can improve the car, should be easy and street legal. Because I sometimes use the car to do a short trip or as daily drive.

Many thanks for your advice.

Brgds.

Better dampers and tyres, so you can carry more speed through the turns more easily.

130 motor, and a 5-speed box, preferably retaining the 120's crownwheel and pinion for better acceleration and hill-climbing rather than higher top speed.

I always tought the 4 speed box was better for hill climbing.I drove some times the 130 of a friend and i found the gears on this box where very long.

IIRC the 120 has a 4.4 to 1 CWP, and the standard 130 has a 4.1 to 1 CWP. So yes the 130 is significantly longer-geared than the 120. In fact, back in the day Skoda UK accidentally received a batch of 5-speed boxes with the 4.4 to 1 CWP in them, and they were all sold to the rallying fraternity within about 6 months.
