New Project 120

Featured Replies

Hello all

I am personally not new to Skodas but new to the 120 model and having move from America to Hungary I personally would like to try a different projct than what I am used too. With this said I am looking to build a decent Skoda 120. I have just purchase a very straight rust free (for the most part) 120 4 speed. After coming to Hungary I have seen some great things (and not so great) done to these cars. Out in Budapest a gentleman has went as far to swap a Ford V6 out in the back of his and there are plenty of VW Polo powered (Polo 100 1.4 16v motor to be exact) and Golf GTI 1.8 8v powered cars. This leads me to my plans.

Motor

VW 1.8 16V out i n the back (I have a 1.6 from my 82 GTI that I just sold but would but not sure if I will use this motor. A 1.9TDI motor may be an option too)

5 speed from a 89 120 or 130

some form of adjustable suspension (prefer coilovers but I dont know what is available

Conversion to rear disk brakes. (With the plan a 16V I would like to achieve around 150hp at max)

Make stronger the body (seam welding and roll cage)

A couple more items on my list that comes to mind at moment.

My qustion is whats the popularity and how complicated would a VW motor swap be and where could I source good suspension components. there are tones of these over here in Hungary in the junkyards and such so a 5 sped is not gold here I am actually buying one this weekend.

My obvious goal is a very nicely tuned (motor and suspension wise) autocross tarmac skoda 120 and I need suppliers and help :D

so any help I know there is a big following of these in cz and slovakia but i dont know where to start. Someone helpt the silly American and his Skoda :p

Cheers :)

It should go in but you'll need a bellhousing adaptor and/or a stronger gearbox as the stock internals will shat itself

5 speed from a 89 120 or 130

good shout id fit a rapid rear end for better handling/transfer or power

some form of adjustable suspension (prefer coilovers but I dont know what is available

for coilies you'll have to fab something see skoda-virt.cz otherwise dampers and springs are available check speedpro.cz

Conversion to rear disk brakes. (With the plan a 16V I would like to achieve around 150hp at max)

a lot of the czech boys use octavia parts ive not bothered myself pm skoda_phil on skoda-forum.com

Make stronger the body (seam welding and roll cage)

seamings easy but you will just transfer the stress around the car same with cages but ive fitted mine as to not squish myself in the event of an inevitable roll

Cheers mate on the reply, the one link has a couple of great parts and ideas I wil be considering. They do have a complete coilover kit for the 1000-130 series that I am sure I can adopt to mine and a couple other parts. I have been reading about the adapter plates from a favorit that can be used to adapt a small or big VW motor. The plan will be to try out the 1.6 I have first out back and see how bad I throw off my weight ratio at first. Some good info tho as I have also read the the 4 speed is complete junk in these cars and the 5 speed is just a little stronger so yes a new trans would be in the plans later on as the car will see its fair share of abuse.

Iirc its the other way round with the boxes with regards to strength

Its a 1.6 felicia you want adaptor plate and clutch flywheel I've got one sat here (I own a skoda breakers) for sticking a 1.4 16v in my track car at some point

1.4 16 would be great as you do get a little weight saving over the bigger VW pig iron. I myself would like to go with a more modern motor but electronics are not my cup of tea (I am a CIS/ carb guy at heart)

The 1.6 I have is a 1982 GTI motor with the "heron" flat cylinder head and 110hp for a starter in my little skud would do it wonders :)
