abs kicking in too early

Featured Replies

hi guys had clucking etc from front and brakes were juddering....... mechanic pointed out wishbone bush had gone and loads of play in it so replaced the wishbone and ball joint.....

wife drove off after collecting car and pressed break and still judders.... checked it on fault finding and it shows nothing... no faults..... tyres are all same pressure.....

anyone got any ideas as mechanic is lost?

discs and pads are fine

Juddering under breaking usually suggests a warped disc, or a build up of pad material, either on the disc itself - or between pad and disc.

When you say the discs and pads are fine, how have they been checked?

If the performance of the braking system seems OK to you, what I'd personally try is a couple of decent hard stops to get some heat into them and also to get rid of any build-up. Obviously a decent, clear, safe stretch of road needs picking for this :)

I follow this sort of procedure with new brakes: http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Brake_pad_bedding_in_procedure - some will say that it's too aggressive and you'll end up ruining them, but personally I've never had a single problem with it, using decent quality discs and pads.

what kind of car is it?

The clues are there :)

oh well garage still got the car..

no fault in abs checked on machine...

been trawling thru this site and web and seems reluctor ring can go faulty but shows no fault code..... when you brake its as if the discs are warped.... abs light does not come on at all

told they mechanic i was looking on net and advice from here, think i peed him off more......

Try another mechanic? :)

It's surely in both your interests to get the issue sorted satisfactorily? Or is he interested in spending the most amount of (billable) time possible, looking for the fault? emoticon-0143-smirk.gif

ok they have disconnected the abs at the ns front and no judder in brakes so its either the abs sensor or the speed ring, however ring is in the hub so chances of that are slim...... queried why it is not showing a fault but his point is abs works there is no fault but a sensor fault does not always show

So you are saying that the the ABS is not juddering now that the ABS ns sensor is unplugged!? But when the ABS n/s sensor is plugged back in then you get juddering!? Also they say that there are no fault codes showing on the ABS unit!?

I had the same fault a couple of years back...got fed up with my independant....went to Skoda dealership and just asked for an ABS diagnostics test £50ish later and a nice big print out.....one front side was "skipping" the other just starting...with no fault codes......this was due to a "dead" spot on the rubber reluctor ring which is part of the hub/bearing unit....so two new front hubs later.....no more problems!!!! Reluctor ring is part of hub/bearing unit...not separate. B)
