DSG hill start - Help Please

Featured Replies

My wife just got a new Octavia tsi 1.4 DSG (her previous was a Mondeo Auto) a fantastic car apart from DSG; she is having difficulty with DSG hill starts as the car rolls back, also on steep winding roads when trying to control the car to turn SHARP left or right, (into oncoming traffic) the car cannot creep forward thus one cannot turn safely.

I have tried to find more info on driving VAG DSG but found nothing that covers our problem, thus I joined yourselves in the hope of detailed help.

Sincerely,

Hi and welcome aboard.

Hello and Welcome to Briskoda

My wife just got a new Octavia tsi 1.4 DSG (her previous was a Mondeo Auto) a fantastic car apart from DSG; she is having difficulty with DSG hill starts as the car rolls back, also on steep winding roads when trying to control the car to turn SHARP left or right, (into oncoming traffic) the car cannot creep forward thus one cannot turn safely.

Sincerely,

Hi there. I am sure you have made a good purchase - the DSG is fast-changing and efficient - but it might take a little getting used to compared to a 'normal' auto. Hopefully, when she has adjusted it will be great.

As well as her getting used to it, the new transmission is 'learning' electronically, so it may not be totally spot on immediately. The clutch may also adjust itself, I think, so it might not be quite sensitive enough to cope with slow hills very well in the first thousand miles.

If you have the 'hill-holder' (I think they all come with this) it should work - if not, take it back! She probably needs to find a quiet car park to get used to it and gain confidence. Remember though, this only holds for a few seconds - enough time to pull off. If you take your foot off the break and don't pull off, it will only hold for a few seconds and then start rolling backwards. You would then need to put your foot back on the break. A 'normal' auto won't do this but it will constantly pull a little and use fuel. I wait on a hill to pull out each morning. I simply move my foot from the break to the accelerator and push. I have never been caught out yet!

If you are parking, you can let it 'creep' like a 'normal' auto. That way you won't launch into any walls. When you release the break it will gently engage the clutch and 'creep' with no throttle. This won't work on a steep hill though. There won't be enough throttle to make it move. At this point, I am afraid you need to use the handbreak. Releasing the (foot) break will engage the clutch. If the handbreak is engaged, the car will not move back but might creep a little - depending how steep the hill is. A small amount of throttle will make it move more and you simply release the hand break when you get moving. In these circumstances DSG is more like an automated manual than an auto.

My advice: get straight on the throttle and it will rocket away.

Otherwise: use the handbreak, like a manual.

Hope that helps.

Andy.

Welcome to Briskoda

I've just never hat any problem with my DSG without hill hold. If it's a very steep hill you're pulling away on, use the handbrake (IME soemtimes needed with a normal TC auto). Otherwise, faether the brake/ throttle. go gently, and it's fine.
