Audi A6 2.5 TDI Qattro 180hp tiptronic 6 speed engine

Featured Replies

As topic says, do you have any knowledge or advise on this engine? Does it suffer the same faults as the 163hp version or is it a further development of the 155hp version?

I know the economy/service costs etc. will be very bad, but please let me know, if you have any thoughts. :-)

I have seen these cars with 250,000 miles on the clock for sale. In terms of the engine the 155 /163 and 180 bhp are similar with the 180bhp having a larger turbo.

At this time VAG introduced the pd injector which was more advanced than the vp44 diesel pump as it could deliver diesel at far higher injection pressures. This made for a more powerful and smoother combustion.

I know of a problem where the central ecu could become out of sync with the fuel pump ecu which causes problems.

I like the coupe style of the a6 (is it an avant?) and think like most audi's the quality of the fittings and bodywork is very good.

I hope this helps and let us know what you decide.

Best wishes

John

The VP44 pump is very bad news and will bring expensive grief. If the designers had any sense at all, they wouldn't put (hopelessly flimsy) electronics on an engine and certainly not inside a fuel pump. The PD has no electronics on the engine at all other than transducers; it's all mechanical with an ECU on the scuttle.

The old 6 cyl engines with rotary pumps are no match for the PDs in terms of efficiency - look at the CO2/tax figure for a V6 auto. The 1.9PD is a very reliable engine - pity about the 2.0 which is completely useless.

rotodiesel.

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated. :-)

If I am not mistaken, 180bhp 2.5 is not VP44, it is a CR engine, one of the first VW CR ones

Edit: looked it up, and no, it was a VP44 one.

Ok. Fair enough.

Just saw it mentioned on a couple of other places too and thought it plausable as I know Peugeot started using common rail from about 2000/2001.

Phil

It's common rail and regularly gets chipped to 230PS +++.

Big turbo makes a very inefficient diesel engine though, so don't expect a 60mpg car.

If you've got a couple of hours to spare, this forum thread details one man's obsession with the 2001 Audi 2.5 TDI V6 engine in his A6, and the trials and tribulations (and cost) of trying to make it go faster. The thread started in 2006 and is still going strong.

Lots of good stuff in there and a fascinating read ..... think I'll leave mine as standard :)
