Toys / stuff for my VRS

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Really getting bored waiting for my new toy now so I have started to think of toys / stuff that I want to add / do to it.

I realise these may have been tackled before but I don't want to get kit for one option that stops me sorting out another option.

1 Lowering / suspension. I want adjustable suspension so I can lower it by about 20mm but also so i can raise it right up for bumps and snow (managed to ground my MK I several times in the recent snowy winters). I'm guessing air is the only way to go. Advice please on recommended suppliers rough costs and recommendations’ as to what else needs doing/getting in relation to this and also if you have attempted the job by yourself or got a fitter to do the job. I've been seeing info about anti lift kits, ABR's, braces, as well. Are these compatible or unnecessary with air and again recommendations.

2 Alloys. I have found a nice set of 19" Lenso ES6's that look really nice or 19" OZ Versilia, both in black. Does anyone have these already and are there any recommendations for Offset's etc. if I want to use them in conjunction with the above suspension mods. Also supplier recommendations.

3 Brakes. Recommendations please to go with the above.

3 Wrap. I want to wrap to roof in black to match the Alloys. 'eBay it' and do it myself or get a local sign writer to do it? Never done anything like this before and I’m sure it's not difficult, just needs planning and patience.

4. Remap. I'm almost certainly going for a Stage 1 and DSG remap from Shark. Or is it worth waiting / saving for a Stage 2 with the extra's they recommend. I think a Stage 1 is probably more than enough for me (famous last words :p).

The remap, if it's a Stage 1 will probably be the first thing I get done, then the wrap. The suspension, brakes and alloys I will probably look to get done at the same time, once I've won the lottery  .

See my sig for my mods for more ideas!

1. suspension; you want to raise up / down whilst driving? like a lamborghini? air is the only option. TBH if you just want mild lowering of 20mm you don't need to be able to raise the car for speed bumps or snow - 20mm is not that low, really. If you want to lower for normal use then raise up for the winter months then coilovers is what you need.

2. no experience of those particular types, but bear in mind that going to 19 will mean new tyres too (more expensive than 18"s) and harsher ride. Check out how much those new rims will weigh too - some cast designs add significant additional weight. ideal size would be 8x 19 et45 IMO.

3. brakes - what for? track days? road use? looks? Depends what you're trying to achieve? More info needed.

3 (again!?) wrap - sorry no idea.

4. stage 1 is fantastic on a TSI. do this first. is easily reversible too. stage 2 is a bunch more money and you'll probably need a clutch too and that little IHI will be on the limit at s2.

FWIW - my list (current car 2010TSI):

1. weitec coilovers.

2. bbs rd256 five spokes in black (18x7.5 et51) 11.2 kg each so a couple of kg saved vs. neptunes.

3. brakes are stock

3. wrap. no thanks, but I have matt black mirrors.

4. shark stage 1 with a tweak by ben, 245bhp 430ish Nm.

The car I'm going to order next month, another Tsi in candy white:

1. Bilstein B16 plus autotech hollow rear ARB, TT alloy wishbones, WALK.

2. Neuspeed Rse07 (on order via Awesome) 8x18 et 45 in gunmetal 8kg each so 5kg per side saved.

3. If I can afford it (tbc!) AP 4 pots. 330mm and saves 4.5kg per side.

3. Don't want a wrap but I may plasti-dip my grille to black.

4. Shark stage 1 again.

Other stuf: columbus (2011 model, just picked up last week off ebay for 340 quid), MF wheel without paddles from skodatiele (ordered last week).

I think that's it?

Rob, just curious, have you considered a NQSBBK like I have for the brakes? I find the Porsche setup to be awesome..

Be careful when wrapping the roof on a DIY basis - there are no roof rails so the vinyl has to be cut once stuck to the roof. You need to be very, very careful not to damage the paintwork beneath.

Yes, but tbh I don't really want to put some second hand brakes on my brand new car - even if they've been reconditioned. Probably not a rational approach I know. There's also an OE brembo kit that was offered as a dealer-fit option on a few SEAT's that I've looked at - very similar to the boxster nqsbbk, comes with 323mm plain discs IIRC.

AP's also appeal as I think they'll fit under the OE wheels - they certainly fit under gti monzas - both 17" and 18" without spacers, plus with the ally bells they're very light.

Thanks all for the info.

Some interesting points that I hadn't thought of. Weight of alloys... Pretty obvious now I think about it.

All mods were for day to day upgrades, chances of the car ever seeing a track are quite slim.

I have gone for the Columbus as a factory option and it's almost sickening the price difference you can get them off eBay

Food for thought to keep me busy researching over the next few weeks.

Has anyone got any pointers who I should look at for air suspension.

www.air-lift.co.uk are just around the corner from me so I will probably call them once I have the car.
