Internet via Columbus

Featured Replies

How can I hook up my Columbus to the interweb thingy using my Galaxy S2's portable hotspot ability? Doesn't make sense to me to use the tiny screen on my phone when I have a nice big touchscreen sitting there doing nothing! Do I need to buy some additional hardware to get the two talking, or is there something built in to the Columbus to help, or what?! Did try searching but couldn't come up with anything relevant :(

Never heard of Columbus as capable of Internet (the way WinCE navigation units when unlocked can get access to Internet using IE, Opera mini etc. via BT connection to cell phone).

What operating system on Columbus? - no clue... VW keeps their multimedia systems closed and well secured. Or not?

The only way I can think of doing it is using the video input on the Columbus attached to some sort of computer device but you wouldn't get any touchscreen control from it.

Basically it's not going to work.

Velcro and iPad or Android tablet in front of the Columbus - Can you stream Audio via Bluetooth with iPad?

It's not possible, although you are supposed to be able to get an internet connection through the bluetooth module if running in RSAP mode. Basically you'd need to bluetooth pair a computer or ipod touch or PDA or something to use the 3G connection. Haven't got around to trying it yet but see page 147 of the Nov11 owners manual (car, not Columbus).

Just a point, an ipad sits nicely on the gearknob consul making a large screen underneath the radio screen. Use mine with tomtom

Have you paired an ipad to the car's bluetooth...I tried but couldn't get it to use the car's 3G internet connection.

Doubt thats an option - not even emails on the MFD is an option! - doubt the car will use a connection for any Data traffic, never mind having the ability to share it's self as a modem to another device.

rSAP is dead to be honest... good idea, poorly implemented...

I've tried add well to connect another device, it just doesn't happen !

You're quite right that the car has no use for a data connection. However, sharing itself as a modem is exactly what it does. With my (Android) phone connected via rSAP to the Superb, I can then connect my (Windows) laptop, (Android) tablet or, indeed, the phone itself to the car via bluetooth to access the internet. The laptop connects directly to the car as a bluetooth modem. The Android devices are more complicated as they lack the Bluetooth DUN profile required to connect to the car - however, BlueVPN application in the Play store works fine for this. I'm afraid I can't comment on Apple devices.

Hope this helps,

m.

I can confirm that this works: The rsap carkit also uses the internet connection of my phone (you have to adjust some internet settings somewhere in the phone-menu of the maxidot). Then I could connect my laptop (via bluetooth) to the carkit (the laptop used DUN via bluetooth) and my laptop got an internetconnection via the carkit!

So my Superb has its own Internet Access Point
