octavia VRS rear caliper rebuild?

Featured Replies

has anyone on here rebuilt their rear calipers?  just discovered my right rear is seized solid, cant even turn the piston, ill try and source a replacement as i think ill break this one before it frees..

no worries you won't break it. had mine (rear right) solid about 3 weeks ago. broke the pin on the rewind tool but managed to get it back going until the replacement arrives. as an immediate effect the fuel consumption dropped drastically  :D

and regarding rebuild: i've seen brand new TRW calipers go for under 100 euro. for that money i would rather buy a new one...

I have rebuilt my rear caliper few times, first time successfully, second time not so.

Fist time i could not use wind back tool as seized bad. So off came caliper unwound piston. It was seized because seals had failed and piston was cruddy and pitted a bit. I cleaned it up and also fitted new rubber seals. Seem to work good for  a while. However the VRS rear caliper is a poor one as the combination of hand brake / foot peddle to the piston coupled with a sloppy hand brake cable return mechanism causes common caliper binding / seizure.

Second rebuild did not work. Fact is a replacement rear caliper fully primed with fluid is less than £70. why bother messing

true which is what i got and fitted few weeks back and working great for now..

May I ask where from, Mark? Cheapest (green ones) I can find are £93 with £12 cashback. I need a pair next time I do my pads, as the nearside bleed nipple has completely seized, and I might as well buy before the price goes up. But then again, I suppose it could go down...

They are original OEM and painted green and fluid primed.

I doubt these prices will go down, as seems to be getting more common to see rear calipers on these older VRS failing.

Cheers Mark. :)

ordered 2 new ones today,   should have them for the weekend, get this wagon back out of the garage, been too many weeks!!!!

I have just fitted two new ones to y vRS. Shame I didn't know BOTH we're seized, could have saved myself £28 and got a pair for £120.

Going to have a go at rebuilding mine and if successful ill either sell them on or keep as back ups.
