Wiring help for some spot lights

Featured Replies

Hi folks.

I am looking to hook up some spot lights to my car.I was wondering if someone could help me out with what to do as I want the lights to run off an independent switch and go on when the main beam is selected..

Basically.

1) Main beam switch = main beam & spots
2) Spot Light  switch = spots at any time

The spotlight switch just as two pins, been looking at the pre-wiried relays in halfrauds but I suspect they are one or the other in regards to what I want

Spots need to be wire to the main beam or you risk getting pulled by the Police.  You can put through a switch so that you can have main only or main and spots together.  Dip and spots are a No No - why would you want that anyway??

The car does a bit of off roading so more light the merrier, and to use them as independent "work lights" like you get on tractors!

OK, fair enough in that situation but be really careful how you wire it up as Police (and I think MOT) will insist they must be wired so they cannot operate while on dipped beam.

You can wire them in using two 4 pin relays.  Use one relay with a main feed in from the battery on pin 30 and a main feed out to the lights on pin 87, use a feed in on pin 86 which is switched when the main beam is on and then connect pin 85 to earth - that's the main beam switched lights sorted.

Wire another relay in the same way, except use a live on pin 86 that is switched by your toggle switch.  This can or cannot be an ignition switch controlled live - it's up to you.

Make sure that you use cables that can take the current on pins 30 & 87, 3 lamps at 60 watts each on a 12 volt system will take around 10 amps in total, also fuse and insulate each live properly.

From a MOT viewpoint extra lights aren't testable.
