Side draft carbs - advice and parts needed

Featured Replies

Wondering if someone can help me:

I own E223 LRN a Skoa 130 Rapid VIN: TMB13M00GJ5132979

It is a Banham Spyder (a Porsche 550 recreation)

Due to the new bodyshape i have an ugly raised hump on the back to accomodate the standard carb which i would like to change. I am told i need to side draft it.

Can someone advise me on where to find / which to buy  carb and the inlet manifold and on setting it up.

Some say 4 x bike carbs would be great, others Dellorato or Web - but i think its too easy to get it wrong.

I am based near Watford, and have low technical knowledge to do this myself but access to mechanics who could fit it for me etc.

Does anyone have any to sell? All experiences welcome.

Daniel

You have a 5 port engine which means you cant run twin 40s as you only have 2 inlet ports. Tuned Skodas of the same era use an up and over banana manifold which would be no good. You are going to have to get something made. I have seen other Banhams that have been fitted with a single 40 DCOE on a straight manifold. That's what you need but I've never seen one fitted to a Skoda and I think it was something the king bodger Banham offered with his kits. You might be able to fit a pair of bike carbs, but again you will need to get a manifold made up. Someone like Bogg Bros in Yorkshire will make you one for a couple of hundred quid if you get in touch with them, or there will almost certainly be someone nearer to you if you ask about.

This seems about right, except that I'd have thought that going for 2x single-choke sidedrafts would mean something like 1.25" SUs similar to what you'd run on a BL A-series rather than bike carbs which are usually diesgned for a 1 choke per cylinder application?

For cheapness I would go with motorcycle carbs, most multi carb types can be split apart (ie they don't have to be used in fours), another vote for bogg brothers from me too.

Totally agree.....bike carbs are dirt cheap, SUs are not anymore. A Weber 40 would give a nice period look and should be easy to get a manifold made for though.

I have bought a 40 DCOE weber for my 1202 STW. I went with the weber because I can find people to tune it easier.
