Skoda S100 electronic ignition & tuning

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have a 1970 S100 in great condition that I would like to start using as daily transport for a couple of months, it has been off the road for the past 3 years and I have just finished the basic recommissioning and prep for the MOT.

Has anyone fitted electronic ignition (Accuspark type) to their 70's Skoda, if so can you give me the details.

I would also like to do some mild tuning (engine / suspension mods), where should I start?

Many thanks

Robin

Your car will have the early dizzy type so I don't think the standard Hot spark ignition kits fit. If you have a new points and condenser there is no reason why it wouldn't be reliable.....you can always keep a spare set in the back and a screwdriver.

In terms of tuning.....what are you aiming for? As you have the 1 litre engine the easiest way forward would be to fit a bigger engine like a 120 or even 130. If you just want to tune hat you have then it's not easy...but it is straight forward - camshaft, exhaust, carb just as you would with any 4 cylinder engine. The head does not breath well due to having Siamese ports and you could do some work on it to improve it. Ultimately you will struggle to get a great deal out of it unless you are prepared to spend a decent amount of money or can make things like the exhaust yourself. Suspension wise....replacing the bushes is a bitch of a job but relatively cheap and will take up the slack in the set up. You can buy gas shocks from Avo, Spax and Gaz for them (anything listed for the Estelle 105 or 120 will fit.....but not the Rapid or 130 models) - you can also get lowering springs.

Hi hawkeracing,

Many thanks for the advice, you are right about the points and condenser, but I have always liked the idea of the electronic ignition as it has been beneficial with all the other vehicles I have fitted it to. I have found some kits available but they all seem to be for the later type distributor. Having studied the points carefully they seem to be very similar to the Bosch two part type fitted to early VW's.

I am happy to spend a decent amount of money on the engine but so far I haven't found anything available, is there a supplier you can recommend?

Ideally I would like to get hold of a spare engine so I can do the mods without taking the car off the road again for any length of time.

I am having some standard wheels banded over the next few weeks so I will also be going for the suspension mods you have suggested.

Kind regards

Robin

For standard parts Skopart.de is the place to go - bushes, cam chains etc available. For tuning stuff - the shocks are easily available over here, and someone like Kent will re-profile you a cam, for things like exhausts, pistons, cams etc then you need to look to CZ - Speedpro, TYM (no English on their site but Google translate works ok) and Engitec - the old 5 port engine is not easy to extract power from though.....you will be lucky if you can get 70bhp out of the 1 litre and you would need to have created a fairly lairy engine to get that far.

I should add - you need to join the Skoda owners club....lots more old skoda geeks like me and a very active facebook page
