Turbo blown again

Featured Replies

Hey guys my turbo seems to have gone again it was only replaced 18 months ago, well I'm sure it's the turbo, at the back of the engine where the turbo connects the turbo seems to be loose and moves about quite a lot I heard snapping and metal bouncing and can see there are a couple of bolts on the metal pipe that connects to the egr and the pipe for the maf, I'm pretty sure the turbo should be secure to the bay would you reckon with the turbo moving by tugging on the metal pipe shows that yes it's popped or not? I can't afford to fix the damn thing as I'm now started a training course.

Pictures will almost certainly help here mate.

I'll get some pics when I can but the tirbo has separated from the manifold

The rubber connector has come off the turbo which the air intake pipe connects to coming from the air box? (The metal/aluminium pipe).

Or are you meaning the exhaust manifold?

The reason I said that is the turbo isn't connected to the inlet manifold in any structural way for stability. Has the pipe split or broken from the turbo exhaust manifold to the egr is that what you mean?

(I'm confused lol)

Hopefully you can see what I mean

Is that the air intake pipe to the turbo your wiggling?

Yeah, and you should be able to see the turbo moving around too

Looks like either your turbos broken in half (compressor side snapped off) its not uncommon

Or maybe the turbo has managed to undo all 8 studs and come off the head but don't think so

Ay? Regardless of what has happened to the turbo that pipe should be bolted to the top of the inlet manifold and another bolt securing it in place just under where the egr valve sits. It shouldn't wiggle like that regardless of what has happened to the turbo.

It could also be that the silicone/rubber coupler connecting that pipe to the turbo has come off which it looks like it has.

If that coupler has come undone that will probably what has ruined your turbo as it will be suckling in copious amounts of unfiltered dirty air.

What makes you think your turbo has fallen apart? Have you looked under your car?

No haven't had it up in the air, I was driving and heard a pop and the sound of metal hitting metal, the air pipes etc were removed by myself to have a look, but I have removed no bolts etc I literally removed the pipe work

Ion the video it looks like the you can see the bottom boost hose moving aswell

I have a guess that possibly the shaft going through the turbo core which the bearings sit on has snapped and the metal on metal sound would be the compressor blades hitting the compressor housing. Get under the car mate, take the undertray off and have a nosey. I'd jack it up if I were you rather than ramps so the suspension drops and you can see better around the drivers side driveshaft.

Thanks guys, I've declared it sorn today until I decide what to do I've spent about £3k on the thing over the last couple of years just undecided if I want to plough anymore into it or just cut my losses and move on, thing is the Mrs loves it and it has been a great car

Do you have any warranty at all from your last turbo replacement?

Nah mate it came with a 6 month warranty, to be fair it sounded terrible from the day it was fitted and I've kind of just been waiting for it to happen, had been down on power for a while and I knew it was going to happen it was just a case of when

That'd a shame mate, your situation is exactly the same as mine was, I had a warranty replacement turbo that was pretty much pooh from the day it was fitted, I was lucky though, changed mine before it completely failed.

I was even luckier that I got a decent garrett turbo second hand off eBay which I fitted myself so only cost me about £140 all in.

I commute to MK (see your from MK way) pretty much everyday from Derby, it's surprising how fond I've grown of the fabia and how comfortable I find it for regular motorway driving. I think they are cracking little cars.

Haha yeah from mk, the car is cracking and I know that if I fix it it will still go on for another 100k lol, just its 11 years old now and it's starting to show it's age, so if I spend £1300 sorting out the turbo etc I may as well spend another grand or so and send it to a spray shop to bring it back to its former glory I know it's money I'll never get back but the Mrs would be happy to drive it for another 5 years or so lol
