Flickering speedo, rev. instrument clusters

Featured Replies

Hi

Mine new Superb has got couple of issues.

In between the LED backlights of speedometer and revolutions are flickering.

I would like to check the back connections first but don't know how to remove the whole cluster.

Could you please give me some advises, direct me where to start to remove and don't break anything?

Any help much appreciated

Thanks

I have a couple of LEDs on the top edge of the speedometer not lighting. They flickered before they went out, but have been out for months at this stage. I haven't been able to fix mine because I'm not happy with the level of force I need to apply to remove the needles to get at the main board - I'm guessing it's a bad solder joint.

Removing the cluster is easy: Move the steering wheel to its lowest, pop off the trim strip at the bottom of the cluster to expose 2 T20 or T25 torx bolts. Remove the trim strips each side of the cluster and the bolts and you'll be able to wiggle the cluster out. The cables into the back are on a locking plug, so you'll need to lift the coloured bar on the plug to release it. Then you can walk away with the cluster, the car will lock without the cluster, so no need to worry about leaving the car unattended and unlocked.

The cluster comes apart easily - there are obvious bolts which need to come out to open the outer casing. The only tricky bit is separating the internals. The internals are held together by a couple of plastic pins moulded into cream plastic coloured spacer between the cluster window and the faces of the dials that goes through the cluster. Slide a small screwdriver down the rectangular cutout in the side of these pins to release them.

Removing the needles is where my nerve ran out - they need to be twisted anticlockwise until they move on the shaft and then pulled off. When replacing them put them back on clockwise of where they rest (Note this before you take anything off) and twist them anticlockwise to the correct point. I got this information from a youtube video showing how to swap dials on a Golf cluster, which is pretty much the same as the Superb one.

I'll probably have a go at this again soon, I didn't know about twisting the needles, so I was trying to pull them straight off (Which works for older clusters). Also be careful not to mark the dial face with your fingernails or anything else while doing this, as it marks quite easily.

Hi

Thanks for the guide.

Could you please email me link to YouTube?

I just want to look at this before I start.

Thanks

This goes through a lot of the detail - the Superb cluster is pretty much the same with different clock dials and backlight colouring - the comments are where you find out about taking the needles off, it's skipped in the video...

Hi

I have found couple of videos on YouTube how to remove needles, the safest one seems to be with 2 spoons...
