Leaking front Shock Absorbers

Featured Replies

Hi

I had my Yeti MOT today( Not by Skoda) for first time and they have noted that both front shock absorbers are leaking slightly . My car comes out of warrantee middle of next week. (3 years old)

I had the car serviced at the dealers I bought it from 2 weeks ago.

I was wondering if the replacements should be done under warrantee.

I have spoken to service and have arranged to take it in on Friday for them to have a look at it but he did say that he has been told by Skoda that slight leaks were not covered but he would check it out.

I welcome any comments you may have

Thanks

David

Maybe not covered by Manufacturers Warranty if you asked Skoda UK.,

& maybe some dealership employee is prepared to say not covered by a warranty.

Wear and tear, external environmental damage.

(you never said how many miles the car has covered.)

But ask the Dealer Principal about their visible Safety Checks that they did 2 weeks ago when carry out a service

for you, and ask why there was no report of leaks.?

They knew the cars age and that a MOT was due.

Maybe he / she will say the leak happened in the last 2 weeks, maybe he / she will do the right thing.

We see a lot of dampers with a misting oil around the piston Base. It usually attracts dirt and looks unsightly. The explanation from Skoda is that this is caused by the expulsion of preservative oil from within the damper. A physical "bounce test" should be carried out and if no excessive movement is found they are to be cleaned off and re inspected.

I have changed dampers for slight leakages and they can be just as strong and serviceable as the new replacement unit, so it doesn't necessarily indicate a physical fault.

As time isn't on your side you might be best to get it logged with Skoda before the warranty runs out, get them to clean them off and re check them in a couple of weeks. If the oil has returned it's best they are replaced.

Hi

Just to close this post

I took car in to Alex Laurie  Liverpool today they said that the slight oil mist on the front shock Absorbers may have been there  from when the car was built and that Skoda would not replace them under warrantee but he would log the job.

I can only hope that if they were to fail in short term future I would have a case for them to be replaced FOC???

They did however vacuum  wash and polish my car, which I thought was a nice touch

I'd be more concerned about the misting/leaking oil than a free valet job.

Anyway Wiganyeti I wish you happy motoring. :sun:

The A5 platform has been doing it since it was launched. The manufacturer insisted the damper still performed as it should and were fine. Dampers changed under warranty for misting were just rejected by Skoda and charged back to the dealer hence the bulletins clarifying what is a fault and what is acceptable.

Yep, TPI is on about its 7th revision with more and more pictures of "unjustified replacements"
