Worth upgrading speakers?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Got an old fabia classic, with just the basic front speakers and tweeters. Got a nice Becker Mexico Pro headunit and they sound OK. Fairly happy with the sound, never have it too loud and theres no distortion or anything at any volume, dont like it too bass'y either, I have it on middle setting.

If I upgrade the current cones to new ones will i notice much difference, I mean is it worth it without spending hundreds of pounds. im talking say new cones (mid-bass is that right?) upto

I'd say your best mod might be to see if you can find the OEM rear speakers and tweeter setup for good surround sound. You'll probably have to find the wiring too, so maybe scavenging off a higher model Fabia would be best? I always appreciate the tweeters in the back doors for that surround factor.

If you're not so keen on bass, then there's probably no need to upgrade the front woofers. I'd say make it a challenge to fit and wire up a pair of oem rear woofers & tweeters. ;)

hmm sounds tempting, ive just finished my central locking project, my god was that a challenge lol!

Ignoring the passengers, you reckon I would benefit from rear speakers?

I suppose I could just get away with fairly cheapy woofers and tweeters?

the oem rear setup is fairly "cheapy" - they don't sound good with the music all faded back there, thats for sure. :thumbdwn: However as a complement to the front bass, the rear tweeters (which sit in the rear door card in the same place the front wingmirror adjust button is on the front door cards) do provide a good sound.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to find the wiring diagram for the ISO block connectors to know where to terminate your rear speaker wiring. As a guide, there's a +/- from the ISOs to the speakers, then a +/- from the speaker to the tweeters in the door card.

This post will self destruct in 5 seconds.......

Is it worth putting the tweeters in the rear doors cards, im not sure what would happen with the wiring. or can I get away with full range back speakers

with the oem front speakers how is the wiring for the tweeters and woofers sepreated?

finally, whats the differnve between 2 way and three way speakers?

thanks for your help

Sorry one more question :D

What does the:

Maximum Power 130 Watt

Nominal input power 25 Watt

...mean on speakers? specifically the 'nominal input power'

And my Becker mexico pro HU has tihs power output, which seems relatively low compared to others, but must be good? (being 270!) Will this be ok driving any 13cm rear speakers?

Music output 4 x 30 watts

RMS output 4 x 18 watts

Maximum Power is pretty much a waste of space, especially if it PMPO.

It is basically the maximum power that will go through the speaker for a tiny fraction of time under perfect conditions (usually just before the speakers go bang.)

http://cbll.net/articles/pmpo

Nominal Input power, is the average power that the speakers takes so to speak.

eg that is the power they can deal with.

From that your amp should be able to provide a bit more than power than this for an ideal setup, as amps usually distort at lower than 100% eg 25W RMS nominal ideal output from amp would be about 25-30W.

Regarding your head Unit, the RMS is the one you are interested in.

The Music Output is probably PMPO again, and the RMS value is the real value.

I personally think 4x18W is pretty low.

With that little clean amplification power on tap I would suggest that you might be better off finding some matched speakers, or a head unit that is more capable in terms of driving power.

(I'm not being rude there, but you will damage speakers if you under drive them just as much as if you over drive them, due to distortion)

The other option would be to not run the second pair as i would assume that the amp is 2x35W or 4x18W and 2x35W is reasonable.

Regarding the comment about where the wiring is split, the answer will be that it usually isn't in most cars.

The wire will go into a crossover, which will usually be sat either as a seperate component or part of the woofer cone and a wire will go to the tweater from there.

The component ones are either a box with 6 wire (1 pair in 2 pairs out).

If the cable does split, then it will go into 1 pair for the woofer, and a second pair with a few bumps in it for the tweater, and i would guess around the door pillar would be the place it would do it.

Hope thats of help.
