Yesterday morning I opened the driver side front window on my way to work and as i approached I went to close it but it started to make a lot of noise, go up so far and then go back down again.  It did this a few times until eventually it went back up again.

 

Any suggestions as to what is wrong?  It's still doing it today.

It is almost certainly the motor, gear and a very rusty cable that is the problem. I had mine replaced after four years. Water had slowly been seeping down the inside and onto the spool, washing away the grease lubricant until it stopped functioning. Then starts to break up, hence the noise.
