Skoda 100 with upgrades.

Featured Replies

Hi

I was wondering if anyone has ever fittet a 5 speed transmission from a Skoda 130 in a Skoda 100?

I have a chance to buy a Skoda 100 without a engine and transmission, the seller also has a old 130 that follows with that is complete but totaly rusted.
I have zero experience with Skoda, but i have had a couple of VW bugs and i know how to fix a thing or two.

It's not a simple job because the S series cars don't have the mounting points for the semi trailing suspension that you'd also need......fitting a 120 L5 box would be simpler because you could then retain the S series  trailing arm suspension. You would still need to cut and weld the central tunnel to fit the longer nose of the 5 speed box though.....but it would be a lot simpler than aiming for a 130 set up.

That was what ive feared, ive done mounted a 1303s IRS gearbox on a standard 1300 vw before, but i got some help and good guidance as many have done this before.

Does the 120 L5 gearbox have sway axle or is it independent? Here in Norway where im from and live there is very hard to find parts for theese old Skodas,

It is managable to find a 1000mb and model 100 project every once in a while.

Im a little boored of VW bugs and their quite popular, i always liked underdogs and cars that others dont like. and i want a car that is under 1000cc (dont ask me why)

the 120 L5 gearbox uses what you call sway axle the same as the S100. As you have a whole 130 you could transfer the whole rear end over thinking about it.......but you would need to do some modifying of the mounts and rear floor in the S series I think....the track would be too wide for the S series body too so you'd need to shorten the driveshafts or in some way modify it.

Has anyone here on the forum done a convertion to fit a 130 transmission on a 100? Ive tried to search for it but its hard to find things about theese cars in google, usually when i search i only find things about "modern" Skodas.
or they are in Czech language.

also, how reliable are the Skoda Transmissions? would a standard 100 4 speed or 130 5 speed box handle 100hp?
And what is the actual weight of the 1 litre Skoda engine?

what i would like is a road legal Skoda 100 that i could go to a rally with and compete with it in a class that is for cars with a max 1000cc engine. Endurance rally etc.

We'd normally call the S100/S120 rear suspension (and the VW Type 1 too) a "swing axle" in English. You can get a 5-speed gear cluster into this gearbox case.

The Estelle/Rapid 130 (and Vw T1 1302/1303) have what we call a "semi-trailing arm" rear suspension.

Both are types of independent rear suspension.

Oh yes and I don't think you'll see 100bhp from a Skoda 100 engine anyway.

i wouldnt imagine to get 100hp out of the Skoda engine, i have another engine in mind, a more modern aluminum 997cc engine with 70hp, that could be pushed to maybe 80hp with the right setup.

The problem is there is almost no one on this forum....very few at any rate. You need to go on Facebook and you will be able to find people in CZ who have done it....Skoda.virt and other sites.

The standard gearbox will handle 100 bhp without a problem......I ran my hillclimb car at about 120 bhp on a standard box for a while but that was probably about it's limit. The differentials are a weak point if you have too much power/torque.

The Skoda engine is light.....an alloy head version (136) weighs under 100kg. The iron head varieties are a bit heavier but still small and light for a 4 cylinder.

@E23Dude Agreed with Peter G above. Also, depending on whether you need acceleration or top speed more, it is possible to fit different crown wheel and pinion sets (from other rear-engine Skodas) to the gearbox.
