don`t know if this is in the relevant forum may get moved,

The reason for the question is due to family growing needed a load hugger bought audi a6 avant 1900 tdi (130) don`t worry wife now has my furby vrs

and she loves it.

can anyone tell me if all vag tdi engines vw seat audi etc all use the smic or do they use fmic instead because i felt the effects of the heat sink from the engine bay to the intercooler on a hot day and being a larger car maybe worse.

Suspect the smic on that car is in the same place as most other cars, down inside the offside front wing, behind the wheel arch. Not well vented and fairly inefficient in this weather at cooling down turbocharged air.

Edit: Should be pretty much the same as the furby. Can you tell the difference between the two?

only thing i did notice is that the turbo spool up was less aggresive than the furby it was more of a gentle spread of power.

but thinking more about it maybe the size of the car gave the illusion but it maybe most audi owners have pipe and slippers and haven`t had the privilege to own a furby vrs.

Think you'll find all the PD130 vag cars have a smic but slightly bigger. Still would of thought you'll get heatsoak. The newer PD140/170 have a fmic as do the PD150 and PD160.

I was hoping that that it might be a fmic but hopefully they have put something in the wheel arch to reduce some heat build up but i`ll find out on monday when I pick it up.

I`ll post a small reply after a few days to say where it is and if it has heat sink probs.

Search for Pikey Mod 1 or wheel arch vent - the concept should apply to cars with SMIC fitted pretty much

This isn't a problem exclusive to VAG cars, my old saab 900T had int intercooler behind the left hand headlight, in the engine bay. It was awful in the warm weather. Itjust worked like a heatsink, until it got hot it was fine, when it got hot it never cooled down and was about as much use as tits on fish.:thumbdwn:

sorry for the delay just had chance to find out where the smic is.

the smic is mounted on the right side of the car looking from the front

my wife`s furby vrs is situated on the left.

did notice that there is a proper air channel in the lower half of the bumper not covered by fog lights and you can just see part of the smic.

after removing some plastic covers seen the smic better, it seems alot larger than the furby vrs just by sight alone and it`s mounted at an angle of about 20/25 degrees from vertical towards the front of the car ????.

but there is no vents in the wheel arch but a vast amount of engine bay space between the cooler and any heat source, engine ,turbo, exhaust seem miles away but soon find out when i`ve took it for a blast or a hot day.
